I coined the term Full Spectrum Nutrition back in the early 1990's. It refers to any formula that provides all of the known nutrients into one formula. Many multi-vitamin formulas do not come close to providing all the known nutrients for the human body. These we call fragmented formulas. Every day your body needs at least 100+ nutrients for optimal health and wellness. These include 3 fatty acids, 16 vitamins, 72 major and trace minerals, phytonutrients, amino acids and antioxidants. Ideally, these should be provided in one formula for the sake of compatibility and to create an economical multi-vitamin/mineral product. In these times, people are looking for discounts supplements, but we should not have to sacrifice quality in exchange for a discount supplement. Saving money on supplements, yet still getting quality can be best achieved by combining all the known essential nutrients into one formula. This prevents consumers from having to purchase multiple supplements just to get the baseline nutrients. Products such as Centrum, One-A-Day and others offer only a part of the essential nutrient spectrum for optimal health. When you look for a supplement, be sure you read the Supplement Facts box. The Supplement facts box is there to provide you with information on what your multi-vitamin/mineral formula provides. In a Full Spectrum supplement you should have 3 fatty acids, 16 vitamins, 72 or so major and trace minerals, phytonutrients, amino acids and antioxidants. Since these nutrients work together, they should be present together in an economical liquid supplement. There are several forms that vitamin and mineral supplements to choose from. The most common and often least expensive are in tablet form. Tablets offer higher potencies in smaller spaces due to the tight compression of the material. Tablets have the convenience of being able to take fewer pills but the breakdown and absorption of many tablet formulas is very poor. You may have heard of the stories about the thousands of vitamin pills found in sewers and septic tanks that have passed through the body undigested. Sadly, these stories are true. Those at the greatest risk for absorption problems are those over the age of 50. As we age our ability to digest and break down hard tablets decreases. This is why it is important to consider the delivery system for those of that age group. The better supplements are found in capsule form. Capsules can be either from animal or vegetarian sources. Encapsulated multi-vitamin/mineral products tend to break down in the stomach very rapidly, usually less than 3 minutes. This allows the natural stomach acids to begin to prepare the nutrients for absorption. This is further enhanced if you take your multi-vitamin/mineral supplement with a meal. The food in the stomach will also increase the rate at which your system will absorb the nutrients. The last delivery system for a good Full Spectrum Supplement would be in a liquid suspension. Another area of discussion when it comes to multi-vitamin supplements is that of additives or fillers. Fillers are most often used as binder in hard tablets, but can also be used in some capsule formulas as well. Some fillers are harmless and actually enhance absorption by preventing moisture and caking of the nutrients. Other fillers in supplements are there simply to fill out the tablets or capsules by increasing the volume of the material contained within. The controversy continues, sometimes to the extreme about the differences and benefits of natural occurring vitamins vs. those synthetically made in a laboratory. Generally speaking, the fat-soluble vitamins must always be taken in their natural, organic state. Synthetic fat-soluble vitamins can store in the liver and soft tissues, building up to toxic levels.

Fibromyalgia is a condition that has so far escaped definitive diagnosis and treatment. No one knows exactly the cause of this condition, but pieces of the mystery are falling into place. I first began my work with fibromyalgia patients about 4 years ago. One of the most predominant factors that I observed in virtually every case was that these people seemed to have high levels of toxins in their soft tissues. Of all the natural or alternative treatment programs currently available, I have found the link to excess toxicity to be one of the most profound. We will discuss my findings and the subsequent program we have developed for this problem a little later on. First, we will take a look at some of the alternative fibromyalgia treatments and the natural supplements for fibromyalgia that have been effective. Since the exact cause of fibromyalgia still eludes science, we must approach this condition with some trial and error. This process has brought about a variety of support programs for managing the side effects of fibromyalgia. Alternative fibromyalgia treatments include exercise, special diet restrictions, and key supplements. I have found that exercise is indeed important in the overall picture but many of the recommended dietary restrictions have proven very ineffective. Natural supplements for supporting the fibromyalgia sufferer are many and we will discuss them below. One subject that I do wish to discuss is the use of cough syrup and fibromyalgia or more specifically the active ingredient in cough syrup, guaifenesin. The action of guaifenesin on brain activity is not completely clear, but is seems to produce a reduction in the pain and discomfort of fibromyalgia. Unfortunately, the continued and over-use of cough syrup for fibromyalgia is not the best way to manage the condition. Guaifenesin can produce a host of side effects and it also must be considered that over time, cough syrup us for fibromyalgia can lead to dependency and even become habit forming. As you will see below, there are other options that we feel are far more effective as safer for those managing chronic fibromyalgia. We do highly advocate the use of regular exercise for fibromyalgia. The key is to find a program that allows for full range of motion but does not over-work the soft tissues. Mild resistance exercise with emphasis on cardiovascular toning seems to be the ideal form of exercise for fibromyalgia sufferers. As we continued to work with more and more fibromyalgia sufferers, we found the role of detoxification to be of vital importance in managing the condition. In fact, I am of the position that excess toxins in the soft tissues of the body of these individuals may be actually a cause of the condition rather than a result of it. This concept has been supported by detoxification of hundreds of fibromyalgia sufferers to date and virtually every one of them saw an improvement in their overall symptoms, many of those improvements through detoxification were profound. We use two methods of detoxification for fibromyalgia. Firstly, we use a cellular detoxification that employs a liquid oxygen supplement. This supplement is one of the most important for fibromyalgia as it has the ability to detoxify at the level of the cells. The second detoxification for fibromyalgia is one that addresses the organs of elimination, namely the liver, kidneys, bowel, bladder and colon. This program takes about two weeks. Overall after thirty days of this detoxification for fibromyalgia, we have seen great improvements. Over the last couple of decades, there have been many 'natural' treatments for arthritis. Natural arthritis remedies have come up from many sources. Many of these natural arthritis treatments have had little long-term effect on arthritis pain relief. Yet using the natural arthritis remedies is essential as most of the arthritis medicines can have lasting and serious side effects. In an effort to find arthritis pain relief, many people have gone to extremes in using various natural arthritis treatments. This has often the alternative health approach a negative image because many of these natural arthritis remedies are unproven.

There is more misinformation about yeast infections and candida albicans that almost any health topic. Yeast diets or candida diets, along with special herbal formulas for combating yeast and candida infections abound. Yet after 30 years in the nutrition field, we have found very few of these to be effective. Research shows that women, following yeast diets and candida diets, obtain some relief from they symptoms, yet as soon as they go off the restricted diet, their yeast infection and candida symptoms return almost immediately. The only substance ever shown to actually destroy the candida and yeast organism on contact is oxygen. Oral oxygen has proven to be very effective in eliminating yeast infections and candida. Candida diets do not eliminate candida or yeast. Candida diets help reduce the symptoms of candida or yeast, but will not cure the problem. When oral oxygen is used candida diets become unnecessary. Buffered oral oxygen is the only safe way to raise the oxygen levels, but you must take the right formula in order for it to be safe and effective. The Institute of Nutritional Science offers a formulation, which has been used for over 20 years in eliminating systemic candida and yeast without the use of dangerous drugs and ineffective diets. Preventing candida overgrowth from re-occurring, once you are enjoying a healthier state of being involves re-implanting the healthy bacteria in the intestinal tract. If you must take an antibiotic for any reason, it is essential that you replace the health bacteria by taking high potency acidophilus for about 10 days after the antibiotic program. Also, if you are female and taking birth control medications, regular use of acidophilus is recommended. The most common symptom of yeast overgrowth in males is what is called 'jock itch', or some other type of fungal skin condition. Once you have your candida under control it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise, a diet of mostly whole foods and to take a Full Spectrum multi-vitamin/mineral supplement on a daily basis. As we have seen, there is probably more misinformation about candida and human yeast problems than almost anything in health. In order to clear up some of these misconceptions, let's take a closer look at the process. Candida Albicans is an organism that is found in the intestinal tract of all humans. Science is not clear as it its purpose but we do no that it is 'normal'. As long as the candida stays confined within the intestinal region, it poses virtually no health concern. It is when, for a variety of reasons, that the candida overgrows, that we begin to have health challenges in other areas. The most common candida problem may be found in women in the form of a yeast infection. This occurs in the vaginal area and a vaginal yeast infection can be very uncomfortable. The candida albicans organism over multiplies in the vaginal area, leading to irritation, burning and discharge. A vaginal yeast infection can oftentimes take longer to clear up that the problem that may have contributed to the yeast overgrowth. Women are most likely to develop a vaginal yeast infection as a result of antibiotic use. Antibiotics destroy the healthy bacteria used to control the yeast overgrowth. In the absence of this 'friendly bacteria', the candida yeast begins to rapidly multiply, spilling into the vaginal area. This localized candida infection can still be treated and eliminated by the use of certain prescription drugs and local creams. If the candida should continue to spread and it finds its way into the bloodstream, a condition called systemic candida can develop.

The topic of health care in America is probably one of the most heated debates in many decades. The country seems to be pretty much divided as to which side of this issue they are on. As one who has worked in nutrition and alternative medicine for over 30 years, I see one issue that has been only briefly mentioned. Regardless of which viewpoint you hold or which program ultimately comes from this issue, any program will fail sooner or later due to the gross economic burdens, which will increase with each passing year. If we do not factor in the one concept that has been missing from this discussion, namely prevention, any program will be doomed to fail. The Obama Health Care Plan as it has been called, leans toward a Government run health insurance program for those who cannot afford private insurance, yet with the Obama Health Care Plan, if prevention is not promoted and in fact demanded, the costs could be unaffordable. Any program, no matter what it is called, be it the Obama Health Care Plan, the Bailout Health Care, Health Care Reform, or Universal Health Care, will have to have strong emphasis upon prevention in order for it to be effective. Preventing illness can save trillions of dollars over the next few years alone. Consider that obesity is responsible for dozens and dozens of health problems, most of which could be prevented by proper weight management programs. As an example, the fear of the flu virus or the H1N1 virus. If we teach people to live a healthier lifestyle, they would have the strength of their immune system to ward off such viruses much more often, cutting costs of treatment. In this heated argument where people are putting their emphasis and energies on tea party demonstrations and forming groups like the HAARM or the Healthy Americans Against Reforming Medicine, all of which have their place, we should be placing equal emphasis on demanding more programs that are aimed at preventing health problems instead of solely on how we will treat these disorders. No system can hope to survive financially unless prevention of the thousands of medical incidences are at the core. Consider such factors as obesity, cigarette smoking, lack of exercise, poor diet, and a lack of dietary supplements. Each of these factors could be relatively easily addressed. Instead we are focusing on health care bailouts, Health Care Reform, or Universal Health Care instead of the real health care program of prevention. Town hall health care meetings and health care debates will only go so far. No matter what the outcome, if prevention is not at the core of the program, any program, it surely will fail. Whether you subscribe to saving health care through universal health care, through private insurance programs, or perhaps a combination of both, we are still going to have to face the fact that unless we learn to change our lifestyles to prevention based concept, the costs will continue out of reach. Even government sponsored health care plans may not be able to afford the rising costs of health care in America. Consider that obesity is the cause of so many preventable diseases including type II diabetes, the most epidemic disease in America. Prescription drug costs are out of control with drug companies making billions more in profits each year more than at any time in history. Sadly, the majority of people are taking at least some drugs that they dont need. Our senor citizens are the most at risk as they are often taking 10 or more powerful prescription drugs at any one time, leaving them feeling less than well. Not only is this a disservice to the client, the costs of maintaining this drugging of our citizens is astronomical. By following simple concepts of prevention such as learning to eat better, saving junk foods for treats instead of the staple of the diet, exercising at least 3 days a week, and taking a Full Spectrum supplement providing the 100+ nutrients the body needs on a daily basis, could save any health care system trillions of dollars over the next decade alone. Health care reform must start from the inside. Our system of health care is based upon breakage and repair. In order for the medical system to survive they must have a regular influx of patients with treatable diseases or disorders.

Imagine a world where the food you ate was secretly replaced with a factory-created artificial replica that looked, smelled, and tasted just like the original, sometimes even better. But most of this fake food, including the meat, was made of only one or two plant-based materials and a gang of weird chemicals, and if you ate enough of it, it would slowly kill you through a range of terrible diseases. Well guess what America? You currently live in such a bizarro world! The nearly complete industrialization and corporatization of our food system is one of America's darkest, deadliest, and best-kept secrets, and the important new documentary FOOD, INC. seeks to expose it by asking questions you'd think we'd already have the answers to — how is our food made, who's making it, and what the hell are they putting in it?
