Shift is an installation where I explore the idea of focusing a space through image, light and sound. I try to create dynamic spaces by projecting and placing video and sound into a three-dimensional physical space, and to create movement by moving image and sound from object to object in the space.

Shift combines relief projection and multichannel sequencing.
Relief projection is a term coined by Michael Naimark describing the idea of projecting an object back onto itself, in this case I project the box shapes back onto themselves. Another way of looking at it is masking the projection to fit the object you project onto. I have developed a software tool for working with multiple projection surfaces from a single projector, a software I have used in teaching workshops about working with video in spaces. It is available for download at my website for others to use.

Over the last years I have created a system for multichannel audiovisual sequencing, a system for distributing image and sound over multiple computers and sources. Nodio, as the system is called, consists of a network of audiovisual nodes, each node produces image and sound. It enables me to compose in realtime, with image and sound in a space.
Sound is created by image analysis of the current video being played. This creates a very tight relation between the image and sound, and when images are moved around to the different nodes in a space, the sound moves with them.

In Shift the projection surfaces of the boxes are the nodes in the system, and the sound is produced by the boxes themselves (by using speakers that instead of moving air makes surfaces vibrate to produce sound).

I find it interesting to explore what happens when combining several audiovisual sources, where maybe the most interesting things happens inbetween the screens: the development of patterns and rhythms, and of audiovisual "powerchords".
