OBAMA READS HARPER'S FROM 1960--BUT MISSES THE REAL STORY ON HEALTH CARE FROM OUR FEBRUARY 2009 ISSUE http://www.harper...
"The other day, my friend, Congressman Earl Blumenauer, handed me a magazine with a special issue titled, 'The Crisis in American Medicine.' One article notes 'soaring charges.' Another warns about the 'volume of utilization of services.' And another asks if we can find a 'better way [than fee-for-service] for paying for medical care.' It speaks to many of the challenges we face today. The thing is, this special issue was published by Harpers Magazine in October of 1960."

A special event held by Harper's Magazine with Shell, September 28, 2008, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.
As the global demand for established and alternative resources becomes more pronounced, four experts associated with the fossil-fuel industry were recently invited to share their views on the future of energy. They met on September 28, 2008, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., to discuss current and emerging cross-border challenges.
As needs increase worldwide, the role of the energy sector will be to promote new solutions both to sustain human life and to offset conflicting responses to current problems. The experts on this panel, sponsored by Shell, commented on the future of oil, climate change, CO2 management policies, alternative energy, and the importance for new multilateral geopolitical directives.
DR. KENT MOORS is the executive managing partner of Risk Management Associates, International, a full-service global management-consulting and executive-training firm. Dr. Moors served as moderator.
ELIZABETH CHENEY is the vice president of corporate support for Shell Exploration & Production—Americas Region.
BRUCE SHLEIN is vice president of environmental affairs for Citigroup.
JOHN TOPPING is the president and CEO of the Climate Institute and the editor of two books on climate change, Preparing for Climate Change and Coping with Climate Change.
