I saw my friend Funcrunch perform this old Johnny Nash (or Jimmy Cliff, if you're inclined that way) song at a Blue Bear School of Music R&B workshop, and it inspired me to go home and learn it.
The next day I was sitting in my dark little cavelike room, not actually feeling depressed but pretending I was for the camera. Actually I was feeling pretty good. Tickled. Really.

All those acrobatic bluegrass riffs and hypercaffeinated scale runs were improvised on the spot. Eat that, suckers. (Apologies to Arlo Guthrie.)

More fun with a Macy Gray R&B tune for the discerning lead riff aficionado. This is what I call the "rifferiffic" version. Blues'd out, blissed out, bagged, shagged & tagged, this lonely derelict example of some of my most rifferiffic guitar playing sits unviewed in a sea of flashy, faster videos. Funk guitar? Blazing metal leads? Not here, just pure groovy satisfaction, presented in my inimitable signature ragged sense of rhythm. (Go on, try to imitate it. I dare you.) Aspiring guitarists take note: once, I was like you, a beginner with a vast panoply of options before me, a worldly man, seduced and jaded by material things. Always practice with a metronome, or risk the consequences you see before you.
I think my leg is asleep.

Ok, here's the obligatory flashy, gymnastic "check out my riffs" take on this old Robert Johnson delta blues tune for the 13-18 yo rock and rollers out there who were raised on Grand Theft Auto. I find that the key is to imagine that the song is a hamburger and the leads are sweet, sweet ketchup. Then, you squeeze the ketchup bottle way too hard, and ruin the hamburger.
There's less flash and more soul in my other takes of the same song. Check out my channel.
How do you like the double chin? Ugh. Well, you're gonna be closing in on 40 someday, too, kid. Laugh while you can. Let's see if when you get there you can play an acoustic guitar half this soulfully :-)

By the way, you dinosaur rock fans may not recognize this odd descendant of the version of this Blind Willie Johnson tune recorded by Bob Dylan (among many others,) years before it was popularized in a much different form by Jimmy Page & Robert Plant in Led Zeppelin.

Well, nothing special here, but I haven't posted in a while, and today my roommate was making garlic baby soup, so I laid down this chunky, riff-laden cover of this creepy little gem from Robyn Hitchcock's "Jewels For Sophia" album. Then my poodle gave birth to a chihuahua! Weird! Was dog a doughnut? Only Cat Stevens knows for sure!
Let this be a cautionary lesson to those who practice without a metronome. Don't wind up like me.
