Gainesville's team of Miller (Tom Miller) and frog have been presenting a new 12 part vide
Gainesville's team of Miller (Tom Miller) and frog have been presenting a new 12 part video series entitled Millervision at the Shamrock Irish Pub before a live audience. Later they plan to air the series on cable TV.
The second episode, Citizen Grapski, contains two parts - the second of which is presented here (in quicktime (lower quality) format and in 10 minute segments).
The short video documentary reviews the trials and travails of citizen Charlie Grapski and his 12 month oddysey with the City of Alachua.
Following Grapski's activities from his initial arrival on Alachua's election day, when he was a candidate for the State House of Representatives, through the filing of a legal action contesting the election, his subsequent arrest by City officials for alleged wiretapping, and his arrest nearly a year later for being present at the City Commission this video exposes the misperception of Grapski and his activities that the City officials and their supporters have spun from this story.
This is a must see for anyone in Alachua, Alachua County, or Florida - as the City of Alachua faces the seemingly insurmountable pressures from the development industry which is leaving South and Central Florida in its wake and heads to the North to reconstruct the face of North Florida on the South Florida model.
Initially aired before a packed house, the Shamrock drew to a near silence at times, as Miller interviews Grapski and shows actual footage of his encounters with and arrests by Alachua's officials. Miller and frog had people unfamiliar with this story on the edge of their chairs, at times laughing, some even crying as this sordid tale that makes Carl Hiassen's novels look more like truth than fiction - as the truth in Alachua is far stranger than any fiction writer could imagine convincing people of its believability.
This is a must see. And it has relevance far beyond tiny Alachua and the State of Florida. This is about citizenship and democracy and how we are losing America.

Charlie Grapski addresses the Alachua City Commission after it disqualified all three challenging candidates (including himself) and declared that Mayor and one other commissioner will be returned to the Commission for another term without the need for an election. Grapski also addresses the Mayor's censorship of public debate on the issue of the 2006 election fiasco and lawsuit. At the prior meeting the City voted to continue to conduct its own elections the same way it conducted the 2006 election. When the issue was heard the Mayor warned that if anyone spoke about the prior election that they would be deemed out of order. Grapski was arrested at that meeting just after his comments in which he discussed the prior election controversy.

On Friday February 23 Charlie Grapski went to Alachua's City Hall to qualify to run for the City Commission.
Grapski had obtained a packet of information for qualifying candidates provided by City Clerk Clovis Watson.
The packet contained no instructions except for the City's ordinance controlling elections (O-11-03). The ordinance establishes that a candidate must complete two requirements to qualify: 1) Swear an oath before the Clerk that they have the two qualifications (a. they are a resident; and b) a qualified elector of Alachua); and 2) that they present a $25 Qualifying Fee or 25 signatures.
Deputy Clerk Alan Henderson, shown in this video, was entrusted again by the City to be the Supervisor of its elections.
Henderson is seen on the video stating that he was not sure what the requirements were. He then reads the ordinance. Afterward he indicates to Grapski that there is nothing more, once he presents the $25 Fee and a state mandated Election Assessment, to be qualified.
Grapski left that day with the impression that he had qualified.
That night WCJB TV-20 (ABC) announced that two candidates had qualified to challenge incumbents Jean Calderwood, the controversial mayor, and Bonnie Burgess. Grapski, they declared, had been determined by Henderson to have not qualified due to not signing a required document.
The next morning the Gainesville Sun reported that the City was going to hold that all three challengers failed to qualify based upon the same requirement.
The alleged requirement, Form 1, is not required under Florida Law to qualify for Alachua City Commission races.
Monday, February 26th, the City Commission and City Attorney Marian Rush (of the firm Rush and Glassman) declared that there was no need for an election as no one had qualified to challenge the incumbents.
The basis: Henderson's statements that the challengers failed to provide the necessary documents.
The problem: Not only is the document not required but Henderson clearly had not required it of these candidates or properly inform them of the necessity that he claimed for this document.
The evidence: View for yourself this video. Henderson clearly indicates to Grapski that he has met the requirements for qualifying before Grapski left.

On February 12th the Alachua City Commission, still mired in controversy over last year's election, voted 5-0 to continue running its elections in the same manner as it did the year before.
After having Charlie Grapski removed from the meeting the Mayor announced that no member of the public could mention the 2006 election during the discussion and debate on this important decision.
Given the controversy; given the past public statements by City officials on the inability to handle the elections in this growing city; given the known facts seen by all in the deposition testimony presented here and elsewhere - how can it be reasonable for the City to continue in this manner.
Listen for yourself at how the Commission praises itself and the job done in last year's election.
Whose interest are they representing? How can anyone have faith in this process? Who trusts them again this year?
