Album: Let It Die 2004
Today's Recipe:
2 cups Sultry vocals 1 tsp Melancholy romance 3 scoops Intimate emotion 1 tsp Daydreaming 2 cups Carefree playfulness 4 oz Intricate layering 3 drops Canadian maple
Mix well and bake over a receptive heart. Serves 11.
Juno-awarding winning singer-songwriter (Leslie) Feist's breakout album has more musical genres and memorable harmonies packed into 11 songs than does a Swiss army knife has tools; shifting seamlessly from folk to electronica to bossa nova to classic R&B to indie rock—all within the breadth of a single album. A product of the fertile Canadian, independent music scene of the 2000s, what is immediately noticeable and palpable is that this Canadian songstress does not hold back from exploring different arrangements and getting playful with the composition of each song: from the spare and delicate 'Gatekeeper' to the multi-faceted and multi-layered 'Mushaboom', Feist arrives with a closet full of wardrobe-changes while still knowing she was always comfortable with what she has been wearing all along. But this shouldn't detract from the fact that one of the greatest strengths of the album is her voice: sweet and inviting in its sitting-next-to-a-fireplace-coziness quality, but never wallowing in precociousness either. A real gem of an album that should inspire any teenage girl to pickup a guitar and a microphone.
I personally didn't listen to any female singer-songwriters before I heard this album. It wasn't immature and overly cathartic in its emotional delivery but very mature and sincerely introspective. The blend of musical styles in the album—ones that I already listen to—made it very approachable. A real treasure.
