G.E.O.R.G.I.A. (Generating Enhanced Oyster Reefs in Georgias Inshore Areas) has commissioned an art installation called The Oyster Gate to illustrate the vital role of oysters in coastal Georgia. The ornamental gate has a prominent key stone and correlates oysters as a keystone species. Oysters are referred to as keystone species here in Georgia because they create habitat for many other organisms, they prevent shoreline erosion and improve water quality.
