I suppose you could use a press, but you probably wouldn't get as much work done as the press is slower and the steel is cooling. Also, I just like hitting steel. :)

the lube is the Hofi formula: 50/50 graphite powder, molybdumen powder with liquid dish detergent and water added as necessary. the initial punch is done with coal dust. it literally explodes the punch out.

I simply used a piece of 5/8" round stock to show how the jig works. The first jig leaves you with a flattened end which is actually easier to work with. There is no going back and forth. Forge to finish on the first, then complete your tongs on the second.

Thanks! I decided that making tongs using "traditional" power hammer methods was an ineffective use of time and effort. It also allowed for inaccuracies that could have the potential to waste time and effort later in the process by making corrections.Hopefully this jig solves some of those proble...
