This session, hosted by chairman of Bradley University's Department of Interactive Media Jim Ferolo, provided an examination of mobile interactions that are tied to physical location and advertising modalities. With help from three of his students, Ferolo presented data from a recent study completed by members of his capstone theory class.
As department chair, Jim's work centers around the design of interactive experiences and their relationship to installations and physical space.
Steven Hoober, an information architect with Alexander Interactive, advised participants in Avoiding the Heuristic Solution by Creating Inspiring Mobile Design with UX Principles. His forthcoming book "Mobile Design Patterns" (with Eric Berkman) will serve as a point of departure for a conversation on the topic of using the techniques of collaboration, team and workshop activities, and iterative design to develop inspired, delightful designs that can differentiate your product in the market, while still meeting proven design principles.
"Every design idea has flaws," Dan Pfeiffer tweeted Hoober as saying. "Challenge yourself to a better design."
An interaction and user experience designer with a strong background in web and mobile devices, Hoober has brought his experience in analytics, modeling and communications technologies to Sprint, Little Springs Design and Alexander Design.
Jeff Tillett, a former senior instructional design engineer (innovation evangelist) at T-Mobile, discussed Organizations and Mobile. The growth of mobile will ultimately influence the ways in which organizations choose to use the devices for both internal and external communication. This talk examined current mobile trends and their relationships to both existing and future communication channels.
Tillett has been working with computers and Internet technologies for about twenty years as a graphic designer and web developer. As a survivor of the Internet boom, he has gained some very valuable experiences. He has worked for large software corporations and on small teams with start-up companies, and said it has been a lot of fun being part of history as it has unfolded. "A lot has changed since I started in this field," Tillett said. "The Internet not only has changed how we do business but it has changed how we communicate altogether."
Josh Campbell discussed Multiscreen Design Strategies, in which he talked about how the fragmentation of capabilities across platforms creates both difficulties and opportunities as designers craft experiences for the varied platform landscape. Campbell also looked at how interaction patterns are changing and how designers can create experiences that take advantage them.
"Designing web apps to bypass native apps is not always better," said Jake Hamann, reflecting on Campbell's session. "Design to take advantage of your targeted platform."
Campbell, the owner of Magic+Might, is a proven design leader with an innovative, strategic and thoughtful perspective. He consistently delivers experience design for major corporations that results in driving businesses in fresh directions and crafts award-winning mobile, television, and desktop Web experiences. Campbell works with teams around the world to deliver exciting solutions, and looks forward to changing the way people talk, share and play.
Kevin Hoyt, a platform evangelist for Adobe Systems, Inc., said that Adobe's mission is to enable its customers to deliver compelling content across media and devices. Topics in Going Mobile with Adobe ranged from the mobile development features of Dreamweaver CS 5.5 to the cross-platform savviness of Flash Player, the Flex framework and Adobe AIR. Hoyt delivered content across no fewer than six different devices that included iOS, Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.
Passionate about engaging user experiences as he is, you'll most often find Hoyt meeting with customers, speaking at conferences, presenting online seminars or just enjoying the chance to share ideas and brainstorm with other developers.
