This video is being shared to honor two great musicians that are no longer with us.
In the early part of 2003, singer Johnny Paycheck was very sick, and struggling to pay bills, so Owen Bly, manager of the band Red Meat decided to organize a little fundraiser in San Francisco as a way of honoring this great musician. A lot of musicians agreed to be part of this event. Right as the fundraiser was coming together, Johnny Paycheck died, so the event was transformed into a tribute to honor his legacy. On the day of the show at the Elbo Room, March 19, 2003, by some coincidence, the invasion of Iraq began, and the streets of San Francisco were filled with people protesting the war.
This is a performance of the Paycheck song "She's all I've Got" by Dave Alvin & Chris Gaffney, backed by Red Meat.
Chris Gaffney just passed away from on April 17, 2008. He had liver cancer, and there were some ongoing fundraising efforts to help him with his medical bills.
As I explained in another clip from this show, I planned on filming this show with three cameras, but a freak accident destroyed one of the cameras. As this video wasn't quite up to the standards I preferred, I shelved it for a later date. With the passing of Chris Gaffney, I decided to edit some of these performances to share with the family and friends of this talented man.
Chris Gaffney shared lead singing responsibilities with Dave Gonzales with a band known as the Hacienda Brothers. He also performed regularly with Dave Alvin as part of the Guilty Men. If you've never checked out his music, it's worth the search.
Thank you Chris, for your music and your spirit. You will be missed.

Jack Ely, the original vocalist with the Kingmen, sings LOUIE LOUIE to his horse at his Oregon ranch. The Kingsmen's version of this song sold millions of records, provoked an F.B.I. investigation over the supposedly obscene lyrics, and inspired countless garage bands. Jack Ely left the Kingsmen before the record hit the charts, and missed out on a lot of opportunities. He's currently retired from the music business, so the chances of seeing him perform are rather remote.
Elsewhere on YouTube, you can see my footage of Richard Berry, the man who actually wrote this song.

Jeanette Baker & Johnny Flamingo perform "Hey Girl - Hey Boy" live in Long Beach, California on March 4, 2000.
Jeanette Baker was a co-writer of this song, which was first recorded by Oscar McLollie and Jeanette Baker in 1958. Louis Prima and Keely Smith did a cover version of this song, which was also a title of a movie produced in 1960.
This show was an event produced by the Doo-Wop Society of Southern California to honor disc jockey Hunter Hancock. Unfortunately, this turned out to be one of Johnny's last performances, as he died approximately 9 months later, on Christmas Eve.
Jeanette Baker is still alive and well with a website at: http://www.missjeanettebaker.com/

Jello Biafra, former leader of the Dead Kennedys, celebrates his 50th birthday at a special JELLO 5-0 party at the Great American Music Hall on June 17, 2008.
Despite rumors to the contrary, he was not wearing his birthday suit that night, but he get topless. Luckily, there's no laws against man-boobs... yet.
This footage was shut with a little Panasonic TZ-4 still camera, so the audio is so-so.

The one big thing Richard Berry was known for was writing the song LOUIE LOUIE, which of course, was one of the, if not THE most recorded song of all time. What's not common knowledge is the fact that Richard Berry was the uncredited lead singer for the Robins (who later became the Coasters) with their 1954 recording of the hit song "Riot in Cell Block #9." At the time, Richard Berry was signed to the Bihari Brothers' Modern Records, so he wasn't supposed to sing for any other record labels. As a favor to his friends Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Richard did this recording, hoping this would remain a secret.
Of course, Richard's voice was unmistakable. Richard wound up recording "The Big Break" for the Bihari Brothers, which was pretty much a sound-alike of "Riot."
This performance came from a show on November 17, 1989 at JJ's Blues Cafe in Mountain View, California. Elsewhere on YouTube, I also posted one of the LOUIE LOUIE performances from this show. Richard's son Marcel Berry played bass, and The Simplistics were the back-up band.
This song was pretty heavy for it's time, inspiring a lot of other musicians, including Frank Zappa, Sly Stone, Commander Cody, Ice-T, and even rockabilly queen Wanda Jackson, who did a great cover of this song.
This footage was shot by Eric Predoehl for the upcoming documentary THE MEANING OF LOUIE, and is copyright Octalouie LLC/ LouieLouie.net.

Here's a video of rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson backed by country western band Red Meat
Here's a video of rockabilly legend Wanda Jackson backed by country western band Red Meat at Don Quixote's in Felton, California on March 22, 2007. The song performed is "Mean Mean Man," originally recorded in 1958 for Capitol Records. This video was shot with an itty-bitty Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 still camera, which actually looks better than some footage I shot with some bulky camcorders over 20 years ago!
Wanda Jackson is an under-rated musician that got started in the music industry thanks to her dear friend Elvis Presley. Exactly why she isn't in the Rock and Roll of Fame is an absolute mystery to me. She's been called the Queen of Rockabily, and I wish more credit would be given to her, as well as Brenda Lee, Janis Martin, and Lorrie Collins, who have really been pioneers in the musical genre known as rock and roll. For more information about this amazing talent, you need to check out her website, and see her LIVE next time she's in your town!

The musical pioneers that shook the world with rock and roll in the 1950's are still going
The musical pioneers that shook the world with rock and roll in the 1950's are still going strong in the 21st Century. Bill Haley's Original Comets are still rockin' around the clock.
This is an EPK to promote the very talented musical group that backed Bill Haley all those years ago - Marshall Lytle, Dick Richards and Joey Ambrose.
See 'em while you still can - they ain't gonna be around forever...

Joining the likes of Brother Louie, Louie Quatorze, Meet Me in St. Louis, and of course Richard Berry's iconic LOUIE LOUIE is this special LOUIE, an inspired musical tribute to one of the greatest microbiologists to ever walk the earth, Dr. Louis Pasteur (1822-1895).
The Frontier "f-in" Wives were one of the hottest bands to emerge from San Jose, CA during the late 80s-mid 90s. This particular live performance took place on May 16, 1991 at the Oasis nightclub, which also happened to be the night another fine local band, Dot 3, decided to do their final performance.
Led by singer-songwriter Scott Long, this incarnation of the band included drummer Lex van den Berghe, who later became a big tevee star on the Survivor hit TV show.
Eventually, I may post more clips from this period, including some videos I shot at Marsugi's, One Step Beyond, and the Cactus Club. Got any requests?

In this little video clip, Smelley Kelley of the band Red Meat, talks about fulfilling one of his big ambitions to sing with Chris Gaffney. Together, they sing "Take This Job and Shove It," which was Johnny Paycheck's big breakthrough hit record in 1977. Originally written by David Allan Coe, this song sold 2 million records, and inspired a motion picture of the same name.
I'm sharing this footage to celebrate the legacies of both Johnny Paycheck, who died right before this show, and Chris Gaffney, who we lost last week to cancer.
THIS IS AN UPGRADE OF A PREVIOUS YOUTUBE POST - with extra camera angle added.
If you enjoyed this video, and would like to do something really nice, you can donate to the HelpGaff.com website, which will help Chris Gaffney's family with the medical bills.
If you happen to run into me at a Red Meat show, I won't complain if you'd like to buy me a beer. They're a great local band in San Francisco, and I try to catch 'em when I can.
cheers! EP
