Happy St. Patrick's Day! This video was submitted to be a part of Wyllie O Hagan's St. Patrick's Day Film Festival Online.
I was very touched by the photographs taken by our daughter-in-law, Emma, of Nora's shop in Ireland on the last day of the shop. Nora has passed away. The country shop was in existence for many years and, it offered more than just the obvious things. Nora provided a pleasant meeting place for all who stopped by. The store cannot be replaced and is a part of Ireland that is vanishing as the older citizens pass on.
Thanks to Emma for granting permission to use her artistic photographs!
~The poem, Nora's Shop by poet Maura O'Neill complements the photographs. It was tacked on the wall of the shop and beautifully summarizes what has been enjoyed and now lost.
THANKS FOR THE PERMISSION GRANTED BY MS. O'NEILL TO USE HER POEM WHICH FOLLOWS:
There's a great little shop, down Ballyneale way
Where Nora, so jolly, always holds sway
She has a smile and a chat for one and all
And a good yarn or two, whenever you call.
She sells duck eggs and hen eggs, straight from the nest
Turnips and cabbage, and spuds of the best
Bacon, rashers and sausages, and all that you need
To put on the table and have a great feed.
Local lads gather in for some craic every day
Sean, Paddy and John, such prime boys are they
Jimmy is Chairman for the hurling discourse
The Ref. was always wrong, if they lost, of course.
They talk of the weather, be it wet or fine
The crops and the cattle are discussed all the time
And what salmon were caught that week on the Nore
Plus all the local news, tit bits by the score
Good luck to you Nora in your grand little shop
When passing that way, I always will stop
For some nice fresh eggs, and the news down that way
And a chat and a laugh, to brighten my day.
