What if there were a grass roots movement — based in song — fostering an ethic of sharing and understanding, and open hearted compassion towards the last and least, right here in our country? What would that look like? What would it be called? ...Second Saturdays for Soup-Kitchens? Would you join in such a song? In the tradition of 'call and response' Commodore Callahan offers the song "Such a Crime" as a call. It will soon be posted on YouTube as a sing-along with a 'follow the bouncing ball' motif. Others are invited to reply with their own versions. As replies grow, our hope is that soup kitchen pantries are filled and the homeless find much needed shelter. This song found its inspiration in a true story, an op-ed piece by Barbara Ehrenreich in the New York Times. The song is our effort to give a voice to the voiceless, questioning the increasing criminalization and hard-heartedness to the rising tide of poverty and inequality. The song asks simply: is it a crime to be poor? See http://www.CommodoreCallahan.com for lyrics.

The Elfenworks Foundation, in conjunction with Campus MovieFest, is pleased to announce the winners of the annual film festivals 2008-09 Elfenworks Social Justice Award. First place went to "Homeboy Industries," a compelling short about an LA-based gang prevention program founded by In Harmony with Hope winner Greg Boyle. The winning team of students calls itself streetknowledge and hails from the University of Southern California." The filmmakers offer an inspiring story, and the strongly compelling and thought-provoking statistics comparing the cost of education vs. cost of incarceration does a good job of making their point," said TEF founder Dr. Lauren Speeth.

For half a century, Father Peter Young has helped inmates and parolees overcome their addictions. Peter Young Housing, Industries and Treatment (PYHIT) evolved out of Fr. Youngs firm belief that effective recovery is only possible if treatment is followed up with housing and jobs training. Fr. Young has forged successful public-private partnerships across New York State. The network of treatment, housing, and job training programs spans 100 sites. Three thousand people rely on services from PYHIT every day. PYHIT boasts a recidivism rate of less than 10 percent. In all, Fr. Young has helped hundreds of thousands move from addiction to becoming tax-paying members of society. www.pyhit.com

Twenty years ago, Robert Egger founded the DC Central Kitchen and turned the food bank model on its head. Instead of providing a simple handout, Egger uses food as a vehicle for change: clients become employed cooks through the Kitchen's Culinary Jobs Training Program; college students learn about service and business in the Campus Kitchens Project; and 4,500 of DCs hungry are fed as the Kitchen recycles more than one ton of food every day. The Kitchen also provides street outreach and nutrition education for at-risk kids. Today, Egger also works to galvanize the nonprofit industry through V3, pushing for reform and a place on the national stage. www.dccentralkitchen.org
