more
'Fool For Love' is the first single from Das Pop album, produced by the Soulwax brothers, David & Stephen Dewaele. Imagine Franz Ferdinand in the hands of Holland & Dozier and you're getting close to the kind of hot rhythms and classic styling this record has to offer. Bent delivers a killer vocal and the band provide entertainment on the finest level, jam-packed with timeless dancefloor nous. They are your new favourite band.
Remixes come with a distinctive Parisian flavour. Young guns Yuksek & Brodinski provide the heavy-weight club damage while Ed Banger's master of beats, SebastiAn, eshews his usual razor-sharp rhythms for a super-chic treatment of grand piano and butt-shaking beats. Finally Belgium's soon-to-be-kings of Cosmic, Aeroplane, bring home the kind of blissed-out-yet-great-on-the-floor workout that makes you think that 2008 will be like 1989 all over again.
Bent Van Looy, Reinhard Vanbergen and Niek Meul have been making music together since high school -though not the kind of music you might expect ... (more) from a band called Das Pop. 'At sixteen, we played prog-rock,' admits Bent. 'Bongo-laced, violin-fuelled prog-rock, to be exact...' It wasn't long, however, before their sound grew into something altogether more accessible and Das Pop was born.
Three parts Belgian and one part Kiwi, Das Pop are Bent Van Looy (vocals), Niek Meul (bass), Reinhard Vanbergen (guitar) and Matt Eccles (drums). The band's spirited guitar-pop is hummable, danceable and utterly infectious.
Soulwax (aka 2 Many DJ's) took a break from touring and remixing the world's biggest acts to produce Das Pop's album, which was recorded in London's Konk and Toerag studios and will be released later this year. Already championed by Parisian dance heroes Justice (who included an earlier version of 'Underground' on their 2007 Fabric Live mix and played a track in their 'A-Z of Justice' mix on Rob Da Bank's Radio 1 show) Das Pop supported them in Paris earlier this year.

AEROPLANE - Todays electronic dance culture is due for a melodic transcendence from the shadowy, industrial electro that has been hammering away at the scene. As dance floors begin to buckle under such weighty beats, the Belgium-based band aptly named Aeroplane is dedicated to elevating its fans toward a higher musical space undefined by standardized genres. They reach for freedom from constraints of predictability, weaving currents of psychedelic guitars, pop keys, disco beats, catchy bass lines and melancholic waves into a singular connection of modern beat-driven music. At the controls of Aeroplane are Stephen Fasano and Vito Deluca, a duo whose combined experience gives life and emotion to the music. Vito brings with him a producer background that pulsates the hands and heart of Aeroplane, and Stephens DJ roots vibrate the eyes and soul. Their unique collaboration of sound and purpose is channelling appreciation from among the biggest DJs and producers around, and the 2007 release of their first 12" entitled "Caramellas/Aeroplane" (Eskimo Recordings) has generated a jet stream of increasing momentum. Subsequent releases have kept their ring tones looping with remix requests from artists like Cobra Dukes, Das Pop, Lindström, Cut Copy, Grace Jones, MGMT, Bloc Party, and Friendly Fires. Projects like these reinforce the integration of electronic music into the omnipresent indie scene. Blends of Cosmic Nu Disco, Psychedelic, Balearic, Emo, etc. are forming a new era of musical hybrids, and explorations are officially under way. After all, machines are human too Aeroplanes orbit originated from an unlikely dot on the globe called Walonie, in the southern French part of Belgium. Stephens ravenous musical addiction led him to a record pusher named Vito, whose shop became the launch point for their combined vision. As a duo, they fuel up on every ray of light that breaks through their similar backgrounds. Of mutual Italian descent, both were born and raised amid the smoky gray of the industrial Brussels suburbs. Their music dissolves those clouds and celebrates a cosmic hope theyve carried with them, each determined to find harmony in life among family, friends and fans.

Allez Allez has been a leading band of the Belgian 80s alternative music. Often linked to the new wave scene, their songs weren't that new wave at all, but they were for sure innovative for that decade. Allez Allez had a very eclectic sound with a multitude of influences. I would define their sound as a mix of funky bass lines, pop structures and an approximate new wave style of singing. The female vocals of this band have been always an essential part of their work. The main song and hit Allez Allez entered into the Belgian history of music and still remains a damned efficient song! Other famous tracks were African Queen and the moody Valley Of The Kings. These songs now havent a similar impact, but its fun to hear them back.

Allez Allez are one of those early 80s hidden gems of the Belgian new wave dance scene who shone so brightly for a few years (81 85) and then were gone but not forgotten! Based around the writing and production nucleus of Brussels based Kristiaan Debusscher and Nicolas Fransolet a third dimension was added by American vocalist Sarah Osbourne and early hi-tempo hits such as African Queen, Allez Allez and Shes Stirring Up became global club classics.
Allez Allez were the funky follow-up to the Brussels-based collective Marine. Meaning "well, well" or, with a different intonation "Go! Go!" Allez Allez were briefly a very successful act. The trademarks of Allez Allez were highly danceable and catchy rhythms, African influences and high quality singing. Together, this formed a powerful and funky mixture. The group were fronted by the American singer Sarah Osbourne, who came to Belgium with her group Repetition and signed to "Les Disques du Crépuscule", the same label as Allez Allezs previous incarnation, Marine.

The Beach Boys are an American rock band. Formed in 1961, the group gained popularity for its close vocal harmonies and lyrics reflecting a Southern California youth culture of cars and surfing. Brian Wilson's growing creative ambitions later transformed them into a more artistically innovative group that earned critical praise and influenced many later musicians.
"God Only Knows" is the eighth track on the Pet Sounds album and one of the most widely recognized songs performed by American pop band The Beach Boys. It was composed and produced by Brian Wilson, with lyrics by Tony Asher, and the lead vocal was sung by Carl Wilson.
Pet Sounds is the eleventh studio album by the American rock band The Beach Boys, released May 16, 1966 on Capitol Records. It has been widely ranked as one of the most influential records ever released in western pop music and has been ranked at number #1 in several music magazines' lists of greatest albums of all time, including New Musical Express, The Times, Mojo Magazine, and Pure Pop. In 2003, It was ranked #2 in Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, after Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. According to Acclaimedmusic.net, Pet Sounds is the most acclaimed album of all time by music journalists.
Pet Sounds was created several months after Brian Wilson had quit touring with the band in order to focus his attention on writing and recording. In it, he wove elaborate layers of vocal harmonies, coupled with sound effects and unconventional instruments such as bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, the Electro-Theremin, and dog whistles, along with the more usual keyboards and guitars. ---------------------------------------------------------------- AEROPLANE - Todays electronic dance culture is due for a melodic transcendence from the shadowy, industrial electro that has been hammering away at the scene. more
After his acclaimed drumtrax ep, Joakim is back.this time tough, he surprises us with a small pop jewel! but "lonely hearts" is not a classic pop song; it is much more joakim's interpretation of one. a catchy tune, which does not want to be one. an exciting contrast between catchiness and a bleeping onslaught.on "lonely hearts," cheesy-sounding strings really stand out over a stoic stomping drum beat, dark singing grates against beeping keyboard playing, in the chorus a wonderful melody has a comforting effect over the very sad lyrics.in addition to the album version and the radio edit, the "lonely hearts maxi" also features the "loving hand" remix by tim goldsworthy. the musician (lcd soundsystem) and label owner (dfa records) skillfully pulls "lonely hearts" to the left, brushing it into a dark club track. with the distorted slow motion vocals, the funky bass run and the demanding beats, it is suddenly very close to the sound that already characterized joakim's club hits "are you vegetarian" and "come into my kitchen."and you'll also fin a joakim dub of the track. this dub keep the pop side of the song with a more catchy approach for a more dancefloor version of the original and with always the weirdness you use to find now in the joakim production...
------------------------------------------------------ Even before listening to Joakims latest single, which is taken from his album 'Monsters & Silly Songs', you know its going to fall into one of two categories: a silly song or a monster of a tune. From the off, it was quite obvious which it is. Definitely a silly song.
Not silly in a quirky, funny way but rather silly as in poppy and dated. Nicolas Kers vocals are the main problem; he repeats himself about lonely hearts, lonely me, lonely you, lonely space, lonely ways yes, yes, for gods sake we get the point, Nicolas, everythings lonely! Its pretty agitating stuff, and disappointing to boot, because I really do enjoy the eccentricity of Joakims DJ sets, not to mention releases such as I Wish You Were Gone.
But before you change the CD out of sheer irritation, check out Tim Goldsworthys Loving Hands remix, which injects the track with energy by giving it a more DFA electro punk-funk feel. Those vocals make an appearance, but theyre slowed down and given room to breathe around drawn out synths and a bass, creating a nice little contrast against the building groove. As the electro groove shows its hand, the sparseness surrounding the vocals does its thing and the two eventually intertwine into a pleasurable momentum. Not quite a monster, but a surprise nonetheless.
------------------------------- After releasing two highly acclaimed albums on the French label VERSATILE, multi-talented artist, DJ and producer JOAKIM BOUAZIZ is back with his third album.
'Monsters & Silly Songs' is entirely free-spirited, mixing all styles ranging from indie-rock to electro and dance. Included also are some pure pop gems like the 1st radio single "Lonely Hearts" which also features an edit by DFA's TIM GOLDSWORTHY.
Recording with a live band, Joakim does not only include improvisations and spontaneous ideas in this process, but intentionally looks for them: "Making a pure dance album would almost be like composing an album entirely in F major", he says!
The cover as well as the entire album artwork has been drawn/designed by Joakim himself
Joakim is also owner of the label TIGERSUSHI (VOLGA SELECT, K.I.M., PANICO A.O.) and a sought-after remixer for the likes of TIGA, FISCHERSPOONER, AIR, ANNIE, IVAN SMAGGHE, TIESFCHWARZ etc...
He has appeared on far too many compilations to mention... to touch on a few recent ones would include CUT COPY's FABRIC, I. SMAGGHE's BUGGED OUT on REACT, Y4K, J. DIGWEEDS RENAISSANCE, GET PHYSICAL Vol 2 & KITSUNE MAISON Vol 2
-------------------------- Tim Goldsworthy is a British record producer, DJ and recording artist, currently living and working in New York City. Originally a musician/producer for UNKLE, Goldsworthy co-founded James Lavelle's Mo' Wax label. He later worked with James Murphy, being part of LCD Soundsystem and is joint owner of DFA Records.
Originally working in the electronic genre, he now produces dance-punk bands like The Rapture and Cut Copy. He also produced David Holmes' Let's Get Killed and remixed artists such as Radio 4, Prints, Maserati and Home Video under the moniker The Loving Hand (or Thee Loving Hand). His latest project is Hercules & Love Affair.

more
Cut Copy is a band from Melbourne, Australia. Their sound, often labeled as dance punk and/or electropop, draws considerable influence from 80s new wave, synth-pop and post-punk genres. Cut Copy is managed by Punkdafunk, and is signed to the record label Modular Recordings, home of Wolfmother, The Presets, New Young Pony Club and The Avalanches. ------------------------------ Hearts On Fire
The track itself, untouched, is splendor on its own. It sounds like something different, something ancient, yet modern. Its a soft, mid-tempo track, with a disco flavor, though with nothing that would be suitable for the dance floor. Yet it has plenty of danceable beats embedded into it. Glittering synth bells, a few 90s electronic flavorings, primarily in the saxophone that features in the song. Everything comes together creating a light, melancholy mood.
--------------------------------------- Joakim does a great remix of the song. He extended the track by about five minutes and stripped out most of the vocals, inserting a pseudo gloomy synth line throughout the song, which slightly reminds me of the intro to the Airwolf theme. The track is a lot faster and a lot more danceable. Its also worth listening to the whole thing because certain sections of the songs are a little different, kicking in with some other beats, drum machines, what sounds like a saxophone. ------------------------- Australian indie electronic trio Cut Copy take many of their cues from contemporaries like Air, Daft Punk, and LCD Soundsystem, but with a distinctly pop sensibility that draws on classic AM radio pop singles from the 1970s and '80s, with elements of vintage disco and synth pop that appeal to song-based listeners as well as the club kidz. Cut Copy started in 2001 as a solo project by songwriter, producer, and DJ Dan Whitford, who released the single 1981 and the EP I Thought of Numbers before drafting in other members to fill out his synth and sample-based sound. Bassist and guitarist Tim Hoey and drummer Mitchell Scott debuted on Cut Copy's first full-length album, Bright Like Neon Love, released in the summer of 2004. After several successful singles were spun off the album (including Saturdays, Future, and Going Nowhere), Universal's Island Records imprint picked up the trio's international distribution in 2006. Following an inventive Whitford live DJ mix that was released in 2006 as Fabriclive.29 (including such unexpected delights as Ciccone Youth's noisy deconstruction "Into the Groovey" and Roxy Music's suave "Angel Eyes" alongside the usual Goldfrapp and Soulwax), the band proper returned in early 2007 with a new single, Hearts on Fire. Cut Copy's third album, In Ghost Colors, debuted at the top of Australia's ARIA charts in 2008. -------------------------- Some of you know about French remix master Joakim The guy has single-handedly carved out his own niche in the punkfunk / electronica / IDM / electro realm. Joakim's new disco/electro style — especially his stuff on Versatile — for a while and been rocking the Brendan Green remix of his excellent "I Wish You Were Gone" in sets for a while. But this 2004 remix of Clashing Ego's "Aminjig Nebere" has had an unprecedented stay in my short-attention-span motel. Sort of housey, sort of dubby, the druggy vibe and uplifting electronics.
