Caught this freight train with 35 wagons climbing up the valley heading north between Taihape and Mataroa. Sunday 7th of May. It sounds like it's struggling but is making a good pace.

BNSF Empty Coal Train heading north from Kansas City into Saint Joseph MO. at Control Point "French".

Just as it approached me, my scanner picked up the Defect Detector. The double track through Saint Joseph is about 8 miles long, and as this train was heading north, 5 trains met it heading south - one straight after the other. I've never seen so much traffic in such a short space of time.

I love the sound of these when they're empty, it's almost hypnotic.
