Dear Musical Friends,

8.12.09
Over the last year and a half my life has been one of music everyday since I acquired Fretboard Korner. It hasnt been easy and has been difficult at best as some of you know me quite well. But I get to do what I love everyday (which is play music) and for that I am blessed. A lot of great music has hit the walls of this old store over the last 30 years. Yet somehow I feel the music that is being studied, taught, played, practiced and especially performed here, to be a little more unique than anything these walls have ever heard and anything I have ever done musically in my life. I have been writing a lot too, probably twelve or more songs since Feb 16th 2008, the day I took the store over. It should be plainly obvious for whom I wrote this next song for. Its that whole Friday crowd who come in to play with me!. Well, I have a lot to be thankful for, there are so many who inspire me within this group, (what with the students who study, practice and perform with all of their hearts), their families and friends who support them and come here for music. Soon I will begin compiling a band from within my school to join me on my next record. This song (The Friday song, if you will) is definitely on the record and I see the best is yet to come when I write songs like this.. There are so many songs Ive written recently that I want to play and talk about. yet..(believe it or not)... I have my reservations. But this song is blowing me away, and I have to proclaim how proud I am of this song. Like all my songs I feel it was a gift, and this one I wrote quickly in the wee hours of the morning yesterday and I saw a shooting star 24 hours later last night after I finished these three versions you are about to see. Keep in mind I am speaking to me, to one and to all of you, The Friday Me, The Friday You, and The Friday We. Maybe I am speaking to myself, one...or some of you, a little more directly than others but Ill leave it to wonder. With that being said I want to thank each of you who come here on Fridays, from the bottom of my heart with all the love and music I can give. This song is for you. See You Friday!.
Signed

About Me:

Over the last thirty years I have written about 200 songs and learned a thousand other cover songs. The first song I played the first time I touched the guitar was Neil Young Helpless. The second song I ever played was the first one I ever wrote, I Need You. Since then for better or worse, I have been hooked on creating music. Danny Glover has a line in a great movie called, The Honey Dripper, where he says being a musician is a disease. I understand that position. Being a musician is a blessing and a curse. It is a gift from God or a deal with the Devil. A lot of extreme sacrifice with little or no reward, in fact. But like I tell my students it is an extremely special and elite club of human beings who can REALLY create beautiful music. We have our own musical language and ways of looking at the world. My first memory was a musical one, bouncing to Sherry Baby in my playpen. And all good songs draw memory back like a time machine capsule suspending you forever in the melody and emotions of the past moment. I personally write a song the minute I am moved to do so by some moment in life that touches me. Also, songs come to me in dreams. The songs are given to me by God and I have done everything under the sun in life but always been a musician first and foremost. Since life is short, I have decided to once and for all record every song I have ever written here on YOUTUBE.
There are many people, (including much of my family), who feel that musicians waste their lives and are losers and to be honest I dont really have much to show upon chasing my musical dream all these years. I dont have fame or fortune to be sure but I do have my songs and my music to leave behind, (come what may), it IS all I have and all I AM. To me leaving behind songs gives me a sense of immortality or heaven. Maybe someday people will listen to my songs after I am gone and you can bet when I die I WILL be in heaven standing and performing in the great Rock Concert in Glory.
I always love to say that if anyone ever wanted to get to know me they should listen to my songs. So I am who I am for good and I believe it is good for me to record all my songs before I die. So instead of obsessing over fame and fortune, I toil away in obscurity in my little music school passing on the God given gift of music to good people and for that I am blessed with more songs and more music, better and better I go. Keep in mind I do what I do because I must. Not all my songs are great or even good and my singing is questionable at best. Yet, so much unnecessary pain and waste have been the cost of some of these songs, (see The Misery Motel), it seems a shame not to share it, not for gain but because I HAVE to. I Came, I Saw, I Cried and I Sang (Ill Die Happy).
I have done some incredible musical things over my lifetime and paid some incredible prices for each song. These songs ARE the story of my life.
One more thing, remember
You cant change the world, you can only change yourself and if you do, then the world changes around you.

HI Doc - I recently uploaded a bob marley cover and other songs to youtube on behalf of a friend of mine (the guy on the videos) because he asked me to help out with the computer side of things. Roots, the singer, is very talented and everybody stops to listen to his MArely covers in Camden Town london. I was thinking of trying to arrange a gig for him in London. I just wondering if you happen to know if there as a band as good as yours in London that we could hire for a few evenings. I dont know to much about the music business and roots is very much a musician but doesnt have the contacts to hook something up. I'd very much appreciate any advice you may be able to give.
thx
Billy

Why do you have GarySchipper1 on your friend list? He's a notorious white supremacist / racist / neo-Nazi up here in Canada. Just Google his name. He used to be a spokesperson for the violent "Heritage Front" organization.
