What does it take to be great? It takes coaching. It takes innovation. It takes investment, communication, inspiration and nurturing. When you are a teacher, you have to be many things in order to educate and inspire young minds.
These short-form documentary vignettes—produced by Detroit Public Television and the United Way for Southeastern Michigan with funding from the Ford Foundation—highlight and profile great teachers in the Detroit area and the schools where they teach.
Using each teacher's story to represent individual hallmarks of what it takes to be a great teacher, every vignette will serve as an inspiring story about a teacher making a difference and the lives she or he is affecting. Viewed together, these stories will work together to build a much larger and broader sense of what it takes to be a truly great teacher. Because ultimately what does it take to be great? It takes hope.

Detroit Public Television and Data Driven Detroit are collaborating to present some of the stories coming from the data, to help citizens better understand where they live. These vignettes are a legacy project of One D.
