2008 Detroit International Jazz Festival Artist-in-Residence Christian McBride playing at Jazz Week@Wayne.
Jazz Week at Wayne, a historic initiative for Detroit, combines the artistic and educational forces of two jazz entities, the Detroit International Jazz Festival and the Wayne State University Department of Music. The Detroit Jazz Fest, a long-time supporter of jazz education, and WSU have committed to an innovative collaboration that supports the area's talented young musicians.
Guided by WSU's faculty and guest artists from the area and the Detroit International Jazz Festival, students will study jazz improvisation, theory, and ensemble playing. They will work in master class settings, jam sessions, and small and large ensemble rehearsals with WSU Jazz Faculty Christopher Collins (Director, Jazz Studies Program and woodwind player), Russell Miller (ensemble director and woodwind player), and Rob Pipho (instrumental jazz and improvisation).

It was no accident that the Detroit Jazz Fest seized the opportunity to create A Great Day in Detroit photo 50 years to the month of Art Kanes iconic A Great Day in Harlem. With so many legendary players from Detroit and Philadelphia on hand, it seemed the perfect occasion.
The Guardian Building was chosen for the venue a striking tribute to the power of Detroit in the 1920s and the fertile environment that gave us Thad, Elvin and Hank Jones, Milt Jackson, Kenny Burrell, Gerald Wilson, Curtis Fuller and countless other jazz legends.
