A fairy (also fay, fey, fae, faerie, elf) is a spirit, often encountered in both the mythologies and the folk tradition of many cultures.
During the Victorian era there was an intense interest in fairy-themed art which revived for a while in 1917 after the publication of the Cottingley Fairies photographs.

Ξωτικά, αερικά, νεράιδες - τα συναντάμε συχνά στις μυθολογίες αλλά και στις παραδόσεις πολλών λαών. Στην Βικτωριανή Αγγλία υπήρχε έντονο ενδιαφέρον γιά τους πίνακες που απεικόνιζαν ξωτικά, η τάση αυτή αναβίωσε γιά λίγο το 1917 μετά την δημοσίευση των φωτογραφιών του Cottingley.
