How the Hubble Deep Field Was Taken tdarnell - 3,457 views - 1 day ago
Since I made the "Most Important Image" video, I have consistently gotten emails asking how the image was taken in the first place.

Here is a video from HubbleSite.org that does a great job of telling the story of how the first Hubble Deep Field was taken in 1995.

What many people don't know is that the decision to try and take this image was very risky for the project scientists. Time on the Hubble telescope is in very high demand and very competitive and using it to stare at an empty patch of sky was considered a waste, especially if nothing turned up.

It was far from clear that the telescope would see anything at all after such long exposures. The risk paid off however, and the rest is history.

AstronomyBuff #3: I Have Proof of Intelligent Design! tdarnell - 125,637 views - 1 year ago
Sorry for the exclamation mark, but this is huge! I have uncovered irrefutable evidence that the universe was designed.

I even disclose who it was.

AstronomyBuff #2: Stellarium and Planetary Alignment 6/30/07 tdarnell - 53,189 views - 2 years ago
There is a cool planetary alignment this Saturday, June 30th. I wanted to play with Stellarium and my new screen grabber software to produce a 'planetarium-style' presentation.

DeepAstronomy SE: The Face On Mars (Isn't) tdarnell - 29,366 views - 2 years ago
Hello Space Fans, the SE stands for special edition. I didn't have enough 'stuff' for my Face on Mars video so I turned it into a video blog entry.

In October 2006, the European Space Agency and Malin Space Science Systems made an awesome, hires flyover animation of the 'Face' on Mars.

DeepAstronomy #2: Numa Numa Guy. WTF? tdarnell - 16,439 views - 2 years ago
Here, I explain why the Numa Numa guy is in the HDF Video, and that no, the video wasn't hacked by elves.

Hubble Deep Field: The Most Imp. Image Ever Taken (Redux) tdarnell - 1,123,892 views - 2 years ago
This is the latest incarnation of the HDF video. The narration has been edited to include research from a paper in Physical Review Letters (2004) which puts the size of the universe at 46.5 billion light years, not 78 billion as I originally stated.

In the video narration, I round that value up to 47 billion light years.

I also took out Numa Numa guy.

O "Hubble Deep Field": A Imagem Mais Importante Ja Tirada tdarnell - 256,141 views - 2 years ago
Em 2003, o Telescópio Espacial Hubble fotografou a imagem do milênio, uma imagem que mostra nosso lugar no universo. Qualquer um que entende o que esta imagem representa, é permanentemente mudado por ela.

A very kind viewer, Leonardo Bays, added subtitles in Brazillian Portugese. Thanks Leonardo!

Life in the Universe (#1): Just on Earth, or Everywhere? tdarnell - 327,666 views - 2 years ago
This is the first episode of a series on life in the universe. Looking for life in the universe isn't like looking for your car keys. It's hard to know where to even start. The best place to start is probably by NOT trying to find alien civilizations, but rather ANY kind of life we can.

The problem is, civilizations live and die in the blink of an eye compared to the lifecycles stars. They could come and go and we'd never know it.

The Hubble Deep Field Video with narration cleaned up tdarnell - 202,275 views - 2 years ago
Here's the same video but with the smacking and breathing sounds removed and cleaned up. I apologize for not doing this before, but I never listened to the video with earphones on.

Numa Numa guy is still there. Taking him out would have been more work that I wanted to do. Just FF past him if you don't like it.

Added James McCarthy to credits, thanks to LodeStone1968 for the info.

It's fun to know stuff, especially if it helps you get the girl, or snag the guy. Watch this channel and impress the opposite sex with what you know about the universe.

Imagine sitting outside on the hood of your car on a clear, dark night. Thousands of stars above you twinkling so bright they cast shadows. You're discussing how big the universe is, how many stars you can see and other stuff you got by watching this channel.

You put your arm around your girl/guy (that's girl OR guy, not a girlguy), ready to make your move...

As things go better than you ever dreamed, you think to yourself: "Thank you DeepAstronomy. Maybe next episode you'll tell me how many stars will fit in the largest condom ever made ...".

DeepAstronomy: Astronomy you can use.
About Me: I've been interested in astronomy since forever. I also enjoy discussing and sharing ideas about the universe we live in.

Let me know if there's something you'd like to find out more about!

Thanks everyone. I realize it's been a while since I did anything on this channel, but I think I've arranged things in my life now to a point where I think I can contribute more. I'm making a vlog post and finishing Life in the Universe #2 now. I just need to get some music and do a few more tweaks to the editting.

Thanks for your patience. It'll be interesting to see where this goes.
