Books: TO YOU: I began and continue this project as a counter to the main stream grip on what we see reflected in the media. I am thoroughly in love with Youtube for being what I have always longed for...basically an uncensored and unbiased medium to present oneself through. I'm not happy with the nudity issues it has...nakedness is reality. Despite this, it is a formidable tool towards representing ourselves as we are, not as someone else portrays us , as we want to be known in the world community. The potential for reaching, connecting, communicating with other people in unlimited numbers is phenomenal. As an artist I sometime feel isolated. This comes, at least in part, from living in a society that views artists as bums, holds us and our creativity at the nadir of low esteem. (They would still be living in caves if not for creative, inventive, perceptive minds!) This project is one way of valuing myself and other creative people, people who are not of the hegemonic dominance that prevails in in any country, government, community, family. This project is a way of reaching out, connecting, networking with others so as to validate each one of US.
It has only been recently that faces that counter hegemonic influence have begun to surface. This through an emmense amount of struggle on part of countless courageous people. Still as late as 2008 native (indigenous, & Indian) and many darker skinned people and non-hegemonic cultures are primarily rendered as exciting, exotic back drops, frames...theme parks for white/hegemonic stars, directors and cultures. As we know White is not a color, but a culture, a way of ordering the world exclusively...excluding that which does not serve it's agenda.
It's about identity, if we realize our own identities we know our power. We need to see our own faces, our own cultures reflected in the world, to believe ourselves as real and potent, to fully identify ourselves. We need to see and hear our own stories, IDENTIFY ourselves in the stories presented to us to in order to be whole...in order to heal the great damage done to our egos, to our psychies through the denial and dessimation of our cultures.
The people I have thus far interviewed are not people I find in the dominant media. These people are fabulous in their unique forms of existing as creative beings. Completely surprising and inspiring, uncontrollable and boundless!!! These people are many of you. As I have focused my little video camera on you and witnessed you open up your worlds, I have been astounded! You are trully incredible...powerful. I thank you for honoring me and our Youtube viewers with your courage, honesty, vision and spontaneity.
Special thanks to Guillermo Gomez Pena CATALYST and he and the Pocha Nostra Crew for the attention their pieces bring to the rest of us. If viewers look at one of our videos they notice others, they will see us as we are not as THAT media would have us be. Many of us have dedicated our lives toward the end of being respected and seen for who we actually are.
This struggle became clear to me and a goal years ago when I lived in Santa Fe. Gallery owners would see my work, invite me to exhibit my work in their galleries then dictate to me what I should produce. Pieces that cattered to their clientel of tourists. Not artistic inventions, but objects that were a mimic of what true Native culture and experience was, is. I wouldn't do it, I starved and vowed to open a gallery where artists could present their work as they envisioned it, not as the esthetics of a limited clientel or click demanded. Friends and I did this in San Francsico, running an underground performance, art and recording studio space called Komotion for over ten years. I see now that this current Youtube project is linked to core with that one...a space for people to present themselves, their work as they choose!
Thank you all for giving me the inspiration and opportunity to fulfill this dream!!! (again & forever)And, thank you to YOUTUBE...who started this Youtube thing anyway?...thanks to those people........if you know them give them and their quick strategic minds my regards!!!!!!!
