What is quantum tunneling? dcolarusso - 283,495 views - 2 years ago
Transcript: http://www.davidcolarusso.com/ blog/?p=33#more-33

This video is an adaptation of an earlier piece of mine--Perspective on quantum mechanical tunneling. That film, however, was designed for a unique audience, and I felt its overall length was limiting its appeal here. So I've repackaged it as one of my weekly postings. I Hope you enjoy.

People have been asking for the math. So here it is. The Sun's core temp is ~13.6 MK. For hydrogen nuclei the Coulomb barrier is roughly 0.1 MeV. This corresponds to a temperature in excess of 1 GK! Luckily, tunneling and the distribution of speeds among nuclei lower the actual temperature required. So without tunneling even the Sun's core isn't hot enough for fusion. To see most of this worked through, check out this link:

Learn how to find south, your latitude, and your longitude with only a few household items and some know how. I should note, however, that in using the home-made quadrant cited, the precision of your findings will be rather low. Don't worry, you'll be within a few hundred miles. ;)

I used to teach high school astronomy and physics, but alas, I'm currently a law student and small business owner.

I'm extraordinarily interested in how the web can be used to improve education, politics, government, and the exchange of ideas.

When I get the time, I produce a science vodcast--"The Tabletop Explainer." You can find this and other science "goodies" at the eponymous link above.

I also blog about the law, politics, policy, and education.

Maybe that was too harsh, sorry. I'm sure that you have a deeper understanding of the topics you discuss, but a high school elucidation doesn't cut it.

Dude, your tabletop videos are completely ignorant of actual facts on any issue they cover. The worst is the one for magnetism. I realize that you're trying to 'dumb down' the information for the laymen, but your bordering on grossly incomplete at best and wholly inaccurate at worst. Please stop as all you are achieving is propelling misunderstanding.

thanks for the vids, you can also place inline solar voltaic cells on your simple motor and make a satellite motor complete with solar arrays. and if done right you can even levitate it like it was floating in space.

Your vids turned from fucking awesome to fucking irritating cos its fucking impossible to fucking find any and searching a list of your fucking videos is 'not fucking available for this fucking channel'.
