Checks and balances within various power structures were ALWAYS opposed by those various elites, who have nothing to gain from the long term preservation of these checks + balances aside from protecting their own credibility amongst the so-called people. Once too many people begin to see the machinations for what they are, namely fraud and deception, the consensus amongst the financial elites is almost always the same, and varies between two strategies: 1.Faced with an overwhelming opposition by the people, these power brokers, will , to some degree, acquiesce to the demands of the populace, mainly by articulating their demands in public, while privately undermining these demands. Rhetoric will be employed to give voice to genuine anger, but at the same time, various schemes will be enacted to hold this anger at bay. Very few officials will actually resign, during this stage. 2.When the first approach no longer works, i.e. the Manufacture of Consent, as aptly explained in Chomskys work, then the outright suppression of dissent begins in earnest, via various brutal methods, such as extra-judicial detention, torture and so on. So, to some degree, torture works, because it instills fear, because noone knows who will be next. Torture is NOT used for intelligence gathering, but rather to instill fear by example: this is what will happen to YOUR loved ones, if you dare to SPEAK OUT.
We have not quite arrived at point 2 quite yet, but the legal framework for it has been set in place, and is NOT being contested by this current administration, nor most members of Congress. Some of the most repressive regimes in history came to power via elections, and by extension, following legal precedents which benefited not the populace, but themselves. Then, of course, the laws are changed, to make EVERYTHING legal, including the most horrific human rights violations, resulting in the deaths of millions and millions of peoples around the globe, via two world wars and the current ones. But, rest assured, it is ALL legal. The end seems to justify the means
