Performed by David Edward Smith. 1981 concert. Wow. See his 1951 review of a concert at the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC where critic Glen Dillard Dunn, of the Times-Herald said his playing "belongs in the same category with Solomon, Curzon, and even the venerable A...

"I feel there are plenty of pianists around who are able to play all the notes of these pieces brilliantly but without putting any feeling for the music or anything of themselves into their performance. What is so remarkable about David Smith, for me, is the mind behind the notes. I haven't heard such an intelligent and expressive player in such a long time, if ever, despite the wealth of virtuoso pianists that exist today." Comment on David Smith's playing of Chopin Ocean Etude, Op. 25, No. 12. Available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v |

Noted Music Critic in 2005 Recalls 1951 performance of Bartok piano concerto by "superb American pianist David Smith":
"I could wish for a solo oboe in the London Symphony that sounded less like a duck during the slow movement, full of bird calls that the composer heard at a resort in Asheville, NC, where he composed most of the piece, and where -- at performance I heard there ca. 1950 by a superb American pianist, David Smith (who opted to become a forest ranger), with Thor Johnson conducting -- birds outside imitated their instrumental counterparts during the slow movement." Roger Dettmer, former music critic for Chicago Tribute and New York Herald Tribune, writing for Classical CD Review Available at: http://www.classicalcdreview.c |

I thought the old Polish masters had the patent on such rhythmic subtleties and rubato. I never heard another American pianist who could play like this! Even the great Russians sound too inflexible. Thanks for posting! (Reply) (Remove) (Mark as spam) busoniliszt (49 seconds ago) I agree with emtube, incredible playing. His style reminds me a bit of Sergio Fiorentino. comments to: David Edward Smith plays Chopin Polonaise, available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v |

Everyone must know the name of David Edward Smith. I will make certain of it, count on it. The man is (I hope not was, I am hoping he is still with us ) a genius. The critics 55 years ago got it right: he is a great pianist, on par with Rubinstein, Rachmaninoff, and the rest. Absolutely right. I sing my name to that. John Bell Young

I am very interested in the videos you are posting. Especially those of your father. I have simply been dazzled by his music. I discovered your channel yesterday. This is what music is about. This is what technique is for. So many pianists stop where your father continued ad-infinitum. He shines creativity on every measure. You surely know all of these things, but I can't contain myself. Thank you.

"... I would have liked to have met him,or have studied with him back in my college days. My teacher,Frina Arschanska, who studied as a little girl in Ukraine, with Horowitz's sister, would have admired his playing indeed.I happened on these videos you posted, quite by accident. I am glad I did because, there is something about him,his demeanor outside of his playing, humbly confident, that has been inspiring me to improve myself as both human being and pianist.I bet he was loved by his students in quite a special way.I am currently staff pianist/accompanist at Buffalo State College. Finding his honest and passionate performances was very refreshing to my soul! In other words, thank you so much for posting these priceless documents. I think every musician can learn and benefit from them.Sincerely,Ivan Docenko,Buffalo State College
