This tune, an original composition by Jimmy Chapman, is titled for Todd's Island near Halifax, N.S. This was the home of Rodeo Records in 1963 when Jimmy made an album for Rodeo's Banff label, "Two Sides of Jimmy Chapman - Down East Fiddling, Southern Fiddling", Banff RBS. 1160. True to it's title, it features American hoedown pieces like "Cripple Creek" complete with five-string banjo on one side, and wonderfully played Canadian tunes on the other. This tune, of course, appears on the "Down East" side.
Jimmy played in the 50's and 60's in the band "The Bunkhouse Boys" in Moncton, New Brunswick and is also credited as having played with Phillips Brothers on the Capital Co-Op Jamboree from CFNB in Fredericton. The 1990 publication "Canadian Fiddle Music Volume 1" by Dr. Ed Whitcomb mentions "Jim Chapman has played for dances for decades...and he is now spending more time composing." It goes on to mention he was residing at that time in Moncton.
