About Me:
In Congress, I serve as a Deputy Republican Whip, helping to manage the legislative priorities of Congressional Republicans on the House floor. I am a member of the House Financial Services Committee, which deals with federal legislation related to banking, insurance and real estate. I am also a member of the House Budget Committee and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
As the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census, and National Archives, my colleagues and I are responsible for oversight of the 2010 Decennial Census. I am leading a non-partisan coalition of elected officials, statisticians, and former Census Directors in opposition to the Obama Administration's unprecedented effort to politicize the constitutionally-mandated census. We are working to protect the integrity of the census the basis for our entire statistical system through a full and accurate count that is free of partisan politics and data manipulation.
I share the most conservative voting record in Congress on family values issues and have never voted for a tax increase in my career. I am serving as the Chairman of the House Conservatives Fund.
Prior to being elected to Congress in 2004 at the age of 29, I represented the 109th District in the North Carolina House of Representatives. I also served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, a post I was appointed to by President Bush. I am a graduate of Ashbrook High School in Gastonia, N.C. and Belmont Abbey College, where I earned a Bachelor of Arts in History. I live in my hometown of Cherryville, N.C. and worship at Saint Michael's Church.
