CoLabART represents a fusion of painting, photography, new media, and digital processes - in collaboration: D. PAUL/SMALL

The husband and wife artist couple, Lynn Small and Dennis Paul birthed their third artist, CoLabART in 1978 during their first joint-residency Fellowships to Yaddo, a creative community in Saratoga Springs, NY.

During this residency, the artists felt compelled to travel to the upstate New York area of Niagara Falls as the story about a poisoning of an American community - Love Canal - was breaking nationwide. The documentation of this yet unknown tragedy produced a cautionary body of work that was both unique and powerful -- Love Canal, A Strange Kind of Love - BluePrint for a Disaster. The movie - recently created to commemorate the Thirtieth Anniversary - is a compilation of the art and photographs from this series. An online environmental confession project - StrangeLove: EARTH ELEGIES V - has been launched to coincide with this important date.

During their 2003 Yaddo Fellowships the couple continued to develop their current multimedia installation work-in-progress, VOICE OF THE LANDSCAPE: EARTH ELEGIES III while pursuing their individual projects as well.

VOICE OF THE LANDSCAPE: EARTH ELEGIES III is an immersive, multi-channel installation that takes its name from a journal entry of the 19th century artist, Thomas Cole, the first of the Hudson River painters and draws inspiration from Kaaterskill Falls, a wellspring of early American creativity.

IN THE BEGINNING: EARTH ELEGIES II is an experiential documentation of a 1998 multimedia, site-specific installation that was created for the Frank Lloyd Wright's Barnsdall Art Park, Los Angeles Municipal Gallery. This two-room environment included three video projections - one of which was interactive, slide presentation, two original, digital SoundScapes, computer workstation, and various paintings, sculpture and digital photography.

Throughout their careers, Lynn Small and Dennis Paul have always embraced process -- both old and new -- as part of their individual and collaborative artmaking. Their creative threads weave a seamless layering of imagery and often incorporate the ideas and endeavors of other interdisciplinary artists in the Earth Elegies installation projects that have evolved since the early 1990s.

For more than thirty-five years, the couple's artwork has embraced the spirituality and preciousness of the land, as well as our individual responsibility for its well being, in the Earth Stains, Landsat, Love Canal and LightScape portfolios. This reverence for all Creation has produced a diverse and often-mysterious pathway as manifested in other bodies of work -- Sufi Cosmic Mass Celebration, Spirit Guides of the Southwest, and the mystical religious iconography of the Kabbalah.

Always at the intersection of art and technology, the artists' website viewart became in the early-1990s one of the first artist sites on the Internet. Currently, their installations are incorporating new media and interactive educational 21st century modalities.

Their first collaboration, during the mid- 1970s, was as Fashion Metamorphosis in NYC's fashion industry. The artists incorporated various art techniques into the design of women's apparel.

Paul/Small have lived, exhibited and lectured in New York, Europe, Mexico, and Los Angeles. Their artwork has been shown in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions and they have received various grants, awards and commissions. The work is represented in public and private collections both in the United States and abroad.
