As great as Ted Neeley is (and he is pretty damn good), the Ian Gillan version is the definitive version. Gillan has a far better voice and he's sure as hell not trolling cause he did it first.

If you think about it symbolically you should be able to figure it out. The most telling line is "I've got brakes, I'm wide awake, I can stop this car at any time. At the very last second I can change direction, turn completely around if I feel so inclined". What if the guy in the song is fooling...

The lyrics aren't at all silly. Sure, taken literally they don't make a hell of a lot of sense, but if you taken them symbolically they mean something else entirely. Think about it.

It's not really a solo album, but he came out with a split LP with Dan Potthast (Mu330) where he interperates a few of Dan's songs. It's all acoustic and there's some nice lead work on it.
