Some comments...
Please don't call the derivative of a real function the gradient.. It has a _very_ specific meaning in calculus ( (df/dx,df/dy...) ). Since you mention the partial derivative, you should have heard of this.
Ugh, I've forgotten the other things I wanted to mention. Oh well.
