Who has NOT wanted to be INSIDE a game before? To get to the point that we are running around in a game, say surrounded by screens or in a much better form of virtual reality, we need to continue to push the boundaries with heavy 3D graphics. To allow this we need more intensive games than platform games. We also need to keep the GPU range OPEN to EVERYBODY so that people can compete to create better systems (because everybody is a show off these days.) Limiting systems and consoles to one or a few selected GPU's means that, sure, everybody gets the same experience but at the end of the day, we'll get better games FASTER if we compete.
By the way Eric, GPU's are also a big part of what YOU do for a job, 3D graphics etc - you should be happy that Microsoft doesn't restrict you (like Apple & gaming consoles do) to certain GPU's as it increases the demand for better GPU's, thus making YOUR life easier - in my opinion.
All I'm saying is that to get cooler games such as being surrounded by visuals and actually put into the game, graphics have to get better. First person shooters are what's "hot" at the moment and the gaming industry brings in more money than the movie industry, so they must be doing something right. It's evolution and eventually first person shooters will fade out but just because we're focusing more on graphics rather than game play (yet they still do focus a lot on game play) doesn't mean that they've wrecked the gaming industry, it's just a new era. Microsoft and GPU manufactures are helping advance gaming by allowing anybody to upgrade their GPU and therefore increasing the demand at a faster rate for BETTER GPU's - remember, the faster we get better graphics the sooner we'll be able to be surrounded by visuals and in the game which brings a whole set of new gaming genres to the system.
Although I loved those old pixelated games the new generation want more realistic games. The gaming industry is stronger than ever. It's just evolution.
