Wool carding with Sue Macniven, part 2

chicksinrubber chicksinrubber commented:

HI sorry it has taken a while for me to get back to your question, I have had a busy few months. You have probably found out for yourself by now, but Alpaca does felt well, and the addition of other fibres would do no harm at all. when I card for felt making I do it just the same as in the video...

How to card wool well for good quality yarn

chicksinrubber chicksinrubber commented:

Hi there, it really depends on what drive system you are using I would say, if the treadle becomes hard when you add more tension to the bobbin I would say it is probably double drive, ie it has a continuous drive band that goes around the main wheel, over the bobbin then around the wheel again t...

Hi, I am glad the video helped, I have been thinking about a full one for some time, but finding the time is part of the problem, I am also looking for some editing software that is easy to use. The one I was using doesn't work with our new operating system so will have to look into others.

Wool combing

Sue Macniven shows how to comb Shetland wool using mini combs

chicksinrubber chicksinrubber commented:

Hya,

I spin from the butt because the scales on the fibre go from Butt to tip and I don't smooth down the yarn as I spin but I do as I ply. This means that the scales are roughed up as I ply so that it helps the singles to mesh to each other and gives a more coherent yarn instead of 2 singles tha...

How the spinning wheel works

Sue Macniven shows a saxony wheel, its various parts and how to adjust a scotch tension. In depth look at how to work out the ratios.

chicksinrubber chicksinrubber commented:

Glad it helped you, Ratios only really matter in that it helps you not work too hard, when you find that you are having to wait while the twist develops before re drafting then try a faster ratio. I have had folks on workshops before who thought that the ratio grooves were fancy turning made to m...

Hi, depends on where you live, but if you look up Ashford on the web you will find stockists near you or look up Spin Off magazine by interweave press is full of adverts. There are many makes of wheel available now, I personally would go for a single drive wheel if buying new there are many whee...

chicksinrubber chicksinrubber commented:

The yarn is stored on a bobbin which is attached to the wheel, for every revolution of the wheel you get whatever the ratio set up gives you in twist, so for a given length of wire on a 5:1 ratio say you would get 5 twists. It is possible to ply many different threads together.
