Geekosystem blogged Man Clinging To Hood Of A Truck Politely Asks Other Driver To Call Police 12 hours ago
I've never been hit by a car, but I imagine it's a pretty stressful situation. I'm not sure I'd be able to stay as calm as this gentleman seems to be. According to the video, this man was hit by a rather large trunk, and jumped on that truck's hood as it tried to flee the scene. Another driver pulls up alongside the truck, and the man politely asks the other driver to call the police. That's poise under pressure.

Geekosystem blogged What Did The Mythbusters Invent For Chris Hadfield in Space? 17 hours ago
Remember that scene in Apollo 13 where the NASA engineers had to come up with a way for the astronauts to fit a square filter in a round hole using only things already on board the craft? The Mythbusters did that for Chris Hadfield when he was still on the International Space Station. They weren't fixing an air filter, but they took care of an important problem

Geekosystem blogged This Is The Best Cartoon Explanation Of Algorithms You Will Probably Ever See 18 hours ago
I'm sure there are a lot of you out there who utterly get, in a second nature sort of way, how algorithms work. I, however, am not among them. I mean, I know that algorithms are 'a way that computers sort information to figure things out,' but that's basically one step up from saying 'magic.' Lucky for me and the rest of the folks out there who don't quite get the what an algorithm is, Harvard computer scientist David J. Malan is is here to narrate a TEDEd cartoon on the subject that will sav...

Geekosystem blogged Sony Releases Pointless Blurry Preview of PS4, So Let’s Pretend To Be Pumped About It! 20 hours ago
Tomorrow is Microsoft's big Xbox event, so to try and steal their thunder Sony released a sneak peek of the PS4 hardware. It's a blurry wide shot of the box cut, with quick flashes of close ups. If they showed the box itself we'd be excited. Instead we're just disappointed -- again. Sony, if you want to steal someone's thunder by showing your junk -- you need to show your junk. Let's break down this failure frame by frame.

Geekosystem blogged Sponsored Post: GE AgileTrac Tech Works To Take The Wait Out Of Hospital Visits 22 hours ago
Is there anything worse than waiting at the hospital? It's almost inevitable that you've had to wait on a room, a test, admission, and more. What if we could just cut that whole thing out? The waiting, that is, not the hospital. That's what GE Healthcare's basically trying to do with their AgileTrac patient tracking solution.

The topic of the Alien movies came up in the office the other day, and I realized I probably haven't watched the first two since high school at the latest. I probably would have wasted hours of my life watch Aliens again, but now thanks to 1A4 Studios I don't have to. They've done a Speedrun version of Aliens that compresses it down to 60 seconds. Thanks! I remember Aliens as kind of boring.

Geekosystem blogged Matt Smith and David Tennant Chat About Being The Doctor, Make Us Long For November 23rd 1 day ago
Last night was the finale of this season of Doctor Who and we're now left wanting until the 50th Anniversary special airs on November 23rd. That's going to be a long six months for fans of the show, but thankfully the BBC seems to be dribbling out bits of information about the 50th. They've even released some behind-the-scenes stuff like this clip of Matt Smith and David Tennant having a chat about what it's like to be The Doctor.

Geekosystem blogged Don’t Panic: Earth’s Atmosphere is Escaping [Video] 2 days ago
Okay, so, don't freak out or anything, but Earth's atmosphere is escaping. Ridiculously slowly, I should say, and there's no concern that it'll happen at any point soon. We're talking billions of years before it's gone. MinuteEarth breaks it all down in this handy video, but it's pretty much a problem of our hydrogen and helium trying to get the heck out of here whenever they can.

Geekosystem blogged Valve Releases Entirely Community-Made Team Fortress 2 Update 2 days ago
If you haven't played Team Fortress 2, you should really go do that. The team-based shooter video game's found a kind of longevity that publishers and developers that aren't Valve dream about. TF2's received numerous updates over the years, dropped to being a free-to-play game, and even added a third faction of robotic enemies. Community-made items have appeared in various packs over time, but their latest update is the first that's been 100% made by the community.

Geekosystem blogged J.J. Abrams is Bound to Confuse Star Trek and Star Wars [Video] 3 days ago
One of the issues that people have with J.J. Abrams on both Star Wars and Star Trek is the idea that he's going to end up confusing the two somehow. What, exactly, does that mean? It's hard to say, but Official Comedy's taken a stab at what they think must be going on with J.J. Abrams' Star Trek Wars.

Geekosystem blogged Batman: Arkham Origins Teaser Shows Off Awesome Deathstroke Fight [Video] 3 days ago
Batman: Arkham Origins is set to launch October 25th, 2013, and this recently dropped teaser shows off some impressive CG, a grizzled Batman, and a really, really cool take on Deathstroke. Between you and me, Deathstroke's definitely in my top five when it comes to DC, so I'm pretty excited that he's been getting a lot of love lately. Young Justice, Arrow, and even his own ongoing for a bit there in the New 52 come to mind. This teaser him battling with a younger Batman is just gravy.

Our buddies over at Slacktory recut the 1971 Steven Spielberg movie Duel, replacing most of the audio with that of a driver's ed filmstrip from 1949. The result is pure genius, as well as a great way to watch pretty much all the important parts of the movie in just under four minutes.

Geekosystem blogged New Periodic Table Song’s the Best One Since Tom Lehrer’s “The Elements” [Video] 3 days ago
I'm a big fan of "The Elements" by Tom Lehrer. You might not know the name, though you really should, but you've likely heard the song at some point. It's literally just Lehrer singing the elements on the periodic table while playing the piano. It's great, and no other song about the periodic table has ever come close to dislodging it from the cockles of my heart. Enter AsapSCIENCE's new periodic table song.

Geekosystem blogged Here Comes A New Challenger! The Tobias Funke/Capcom Mashup The Internet Has Been Waiting For 4 days ago
Yesterday, we were almost giddy over the news that you can now green screen Arrested Development's Tobias Funke (doctor, actor, and the world's first analrapist) into any video through the promotional magic of the new InsertMeAnywhere tool. We were so excited at this development, though, that we actually may have missed one of the other awesome uses for InsertMeAnywhere -- putting the many faces of Tobias Funke to work in video games. Capcom didn't miss a beat, though, and their supercut of T...

Geekosystem blogged First Trailer for Riddick Drops, Features Lots of Creepy Critters [Video] 5 days ago
What's left to say about the Riddick franchise and Vin Diesel starring as the eponymous main character? Apparently enough to make a new movie. Simply titled Riddick, the latest movie releases on September 9th, and the trailer that just dropped kind of...looks like a bit of a rehash of Pitch Black? Whatever, it'll be good for an hour or two of Diesel beating up on people and then trying to save them when the inevitable darkness descends.

Geekosystem blogged Doctor Who is Great, But These Fake Websites and Apps Used on the Show Are Not [Video] 5 days ago
There are few things I love more than Doctor Who, but even I have to admit that some of the mocked-up websites and apps depicted in the show are a little bonkers. I won't go through and list the worst offenders, but the folks at Slacktory sure seem to be up to the task. They've put together a compilation of cheesy sites and apps from what appear to be the first four seasons of the current Doctor Who.

Geekosystem blogged Welcome to Level 7: Here’s the First Full Trailer for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 6 days ago
We caught a quick look at some footage from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. already, but this is the first full trailer, and it's spectacular. It gives us a sense of the team and their dynamic without giving too much away in terms of story. We find out that Agent Coulson survived the events of The Avengers, but we don't find out how. This is just speculation, but is J. August Richards coming across as a little bit like Luke Cage? Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air Tuesdays this fall.

Geekosystem blogged What Will Being Born In Space Mean For Future Generations? Nothing Good, Probably 6 days ago
With humans continuing our long, slow journey into space, it's only a matter of time before children are conceived and born in space, whether it's on a space station like the ISS or a colony on Mars. But Vsauce explains how low gravity and other concerns -- like radiation exposure -- mean that taking humanity into space could make having a kid even more complicated than it already is.

Geekosystem blogged What Do Sad Cats Write About In Their Diaries? Find Out In This Video 1 week ago
I have a dog, and it's fun to imagine what he might be thinking because he's generally pretty pumped about every single thing that happens. Cats, however, always seem pretty miserable, so imagining what they're thinking would probably be really depressing. Ze Frank settled it once and for all and made this video of sad cat diary entries over pictures of sad cats. It's a little depressing, but it's also hilarious.

Geekosystem blogged An Exploration of the Art of Data Visualization [Video] 1 week ago
Data visualization, in a lot of ways, can be considered a science more than anything else. Sure, it can be artistic, but it's all about how to present, well, data. A good visualization of data, no matter how pretty, is only as good as the information that it's based on. As Edward Tufte says in the latest video for PBS Off Book, "And so, the history of visualizing data is very substantially a history of science."
