Don't forget to read my blog at canucktunes.wordpress.com
FYI, I am being harassed by an anti-sealing freak that was suspended from Youtube three times in June/July 2009. Details on my blog, along with the reasons why I do not buy the activist's claims.
Here's the IUCN Red List entry on the harp seal : www.iucnredlist.org/details/41 671/0 (remove the space)

Their last straw is to blame anyone of european descent who participate in the industry. Of course you won't be breaking any rules of political correctness if you vilify that group. Ironic that the anti sealing lobby is composed mainly of white urban people. One should view the video here on youtube by Mary Simon, the National Canadian Inuit Leader, titled Inuit on Sealing. She pulls no punches in her comments on the anti sealing lobby
Seals are known to trash about after they're dead but of course the anti-sealing groups would rather keep this information from their donators, who assume these seals are still alive. After all, it keeps the donations coming.
BTW, postmortem reflexes are common in chicken that are beheaded and cows who are hammered in the head in slaughterhouses through-out the world. Postmortem spasms are observed in human cadavers.
It's time for a reality check. Culls happen in the Unites States and Europe, and nuisance seals are addressed in the same manner in these places as they are in Canada. These measures will not stop and this little game the activists are playing merely ensured less of the seals will be used after they're killed.
You clearly don't understand that you're being manipulated. This is a non issue that the activists groups are exaggerating to get people like you to send money to them.
The Eu commissioned EFSA report, which can be found by Googling EFSA-Q-2007-118, clearly states in conclusions 3 (page 94) that the methods used are humane because seals are "killed rapidly and effectively without causing avoidable pain, distress, fear and other forms of suffering, using a variety of methods that aim to destroy sensory brain functions".
The EFSA also concluded, on general conclusion 4 (page 94), that a systemic non compliance has not been proved. So the EU vote was arbitrary and not based on scientific evidence, in clear violation of several WTO regulations.
The IUCN clearly state they are in no way threatened on their Red List web site by the hunt. 1.4 million of them are born every year and there are 8 million of them worldwide. Do the math.
