Centro Interpretativo à Descoberta do Novo Mundo, efectuado pela Arqueohoje para a Câmara Municipal de Belmonte. Trata-se de um projecto didáctico sobre a Viagem de Pedro Álvares Cabral e da evolução de 500 anos do Brasil. Neste local aliamos o saber histórico cultural com as novas tecnologias num espaço de emoções e sensações que transforma a nossa História em Futuro.Five hundred years after the discovery of Brazil the statue of the discoverer stands in Largo António José de Almeida, 100 metres from the Town Hall. Walk up Rua 1º de Maio to the lovely Praça da República, where you will find the former Town Hall with the clock tower. This is also where the Tourist Office is located. At the center of the square stands the fifteenth century pilory while around the square there are some interesting houses where you can buy local handicrafts and produts from Serra da Estrela. Then head for Largo Afonso Costa, turn left and go up Rua do Castelo where you will find this solidly built monument standing on its vast granite slab. Visit the Castle which comprises the Keep, traces of the old Governor's quarters (Paço dos Cabrais) and a modern open-air amphitheatre surrounded by imposing walls. Go up to the Manueline window, a true gem in grabite, from which there is a view over the whole length of Serra da Estrela. As you leave the castle, in front are the chapels of Saint Anthony (sixteenth century) and Calvary (nineteenth century) and, to the right, the wooden cross in Brazilian holy wood (a replica of the cross raised by in the first mass celebrated in Brazil), presented to the townin the fifties by the Brazilian President Kubichek de Oliveira. Also on the right stands the Roman style church of Saint Tiago which is a worth a visit. In the high chapel and to the right of the lateral entrance you will see different layers that remain of frescoes dating from the sisteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The lateral altar, also known as the chapel of Our Lady of Pity, is a fine piece of Gothic work with finely carved capitals and where the tomb rests of Maria Gil Cabral, founder of the Chapel at the close of fourteenth century, and also a very rare Pietà in multi-coloured granite. Visit the Pantheon of the Cabrais where the tomb of Pedro Álvares Cabral lies, along with other members of his family. When you leav this church, on the right you will see the bell tower which is part of this religious complex. Then take Rua de Judaria to visit the new synagogue wooden cross is raised. Take Rua do Castelo again and then Rua 25 de Abrilin the direction of the Church of the Holy Family, where on the lateral altar you will find the famous statue of Our Lady of Hope which is said to have accompanied Pedro Álvares Cabral to Brazil.
