Centro Interpretativo à Descoberta do Novo Mundo-The New World Discovery Center calhaurolado - 402 views - 2 weeks ago
Five hundred years after the discovery of Brazil the statue of the discoverer stands in Largo António José de Almeida, 100 metres from the Town Hall. Walk up Rua 1º de Maio to the lovely Praça da República, where you will find the former Town Hall with the clock tower. This is also where the Tourist Office is located. At the center of the square stands the fifteenth century pilory while around the square there are some interesting houses where you can buy local handicrafts and produts from Serra da Estrela. Then head for Largo Afonso Costa, turn left and go up Rua do Castelo where you will find this solidly built monument standing on its vast granite slab. Visit the Castle which comprises the Keep, traces of the old Governor's quarters (Paço dos Cabrais) and a modern open-air amphitheatre surrounded by imposing walls. Go up to the Manueline window, a true gem in grabite, from which there is a view over the whole length of Serra da Estrela. As you leave the castle, in front are the chapels of Saint Anthony (sixteenth century) and Calvary (nineteenth century) and, to the right, the wooden cross in Brazilian holy wood (a replica of the cross raised by in the first mass celebrated in Brazil), presented to the townin the fifties by the Brazilian President Kubichek de Oliveira. Also on the right stands the Roman style church of Saint Tiago which is a worth a visit. In the high chapel and to the right of the lateral entrance you will see different layers that remain of frescoes dating from the sisteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The lateral altar, also known as the chapel of Our Lady of Pity, is a fine piece of Gothic work with finely carved capitals and where the tomb rests of Maria Gil Cabral, founder of the Chapel at the close of fourteenth century, and also a very rare Pietà in multi-coloured granite. Visit the Pantheon of the Cabrais where the tomb of Pedro Álvares Cabral lies, along with other members of his family. When you leav this church, on the right you will see the bell tower which is part of this religious complex. Then take Rua de Judaria to visit the new synagogue wooden cross is raised. Take Rua do Castelo again and then Rua 25 de Abrilin the direction of the Church of the Holy Family, where on the lateral altar you will find the famous statue of Our Lady of Hope which is said to have accompanied Pedro Álvares Cabral to Brazil.

Jazz Báltica - Bunky Green with Stefano di Battista and Greg Osby-Born: April 23, 1935
Performer, educator, composer, arranger, lecturer, and music education consultant, Professor Green has 14 albums released in his name on vintage labels such as Chess, Exodus, Cadet, and Vanguard. As an international performer, educator, and lecturer, his European tours have taken him to Poland, Italy, Sicily, Sardinia, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, and Africa.

Professor Green received film credit for his background solo work in Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, featuring Danny Glover and Esther Rolle. He is Past President and permanent chair of the Past Presidents Council of the world's largest jazz education organization, the International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE). Professor Green received a rare five star rating from Downbeat Magazine for his album Healing the Pain. Along with Gary Burton, Gerald Wilson, Jackie McLean, and Rufus Reid, he was cited in a 1995 DownBeat Magazine article recognizing the nation's leading jazz educators who are also respected players.

In a 1997 DownBeat article, saxophone great Joe Lovano said, Bunky personifies what jazz is all about. He's combined all the inspiration of Parker and Dolphy and fused it into an individual voice. He's the kind of player I've always strived to be in my music, taking hold of history and then moving on, through self-expression. Working alongside him has been a real highlight.

In January of 1999, Professor Green was inducted into the IAJE Hall of Fame. Most recently in 2003, he was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame for Jazz Education.

The french violinist plays a beautiful, emotional version of the classic "As time goes by". There was no music video for that (or none I knew of) so I created mine with some pictures from the N°1 movie classic of all times
