Congressman Castle (R-DE) and Congresswoman McCarthy (D-NY) introduced The Bipartisan Gun Show Loophole Closing Act in the US House of Representatives. The law would require Brady background checks for all sales at gun shows across the nation. The result would be no legal way for criminals, juveniles, mentally ill, and domestic abusers to buy weapons at gun shows. Featured speakers included Virginia Tech Massacre victims and public safety advocates. In the shadow of the US Capitol.
The Brady Law requires criminal background checks of gun buyers at licensed dealers, but there is a loophole at gun shows. Convicted felons, domestic violence abusers, and those who are dangerously mentally ill can walk into any gun show and buy weapons from unlicensed sellers without being stopped, no questions asked. Several families of the Virginia Tech massacre and Brady Campaign President, Paul Helmke, joined Congress on Capitol Hill and urged for passing this important bill that would help keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of dangerous people. |

Hundreds of the nation's mayors and law enforcement leaders have come together from across the country to urge Congress to repeal these restrictions. The crime gun trace data is so critical to mayors and law enforcement because without it, dangerous gun dealers avoid public scrutiny and local police are deprived of warnings of possible criminal activity in their communities.
