Atkins Diet: Why do people fail on Atkins diet? bowulf - 498 views - 3 weeks ago
In what might not be the most popular video I have ever done, I deal with the topic on why others have failed or not succeeded on the Atkins Diet. Some times you have to take accountability for your own actions, but my goal was to use these stories of past failed attempts of the Atkins Diets to prevent others from falling victim to the same thinking.

Here is the top 7 reasons people fail:
1. Use it as a fad diet or quick weight loss, and then hop off the diet.
2. Never read the book / think there is only one phase
3. Modify the diet or believe they know better
4. Believe if a little is good, then none must be better
5. Believe they can cycle carbs to achieve better results, and end up just cycling on
6. Cheat a single time due to a unique occassion / failure to plan, and give up on themselves
7. Get frustrated with a weight loss hesitation or stall and call it quits

Atkins Diet: Daily Sweetener Limit bowulf - 732 views - 1 month ago
In this video, I deal with a much overlooked section of the Induction phase (and latter phases). It covers the daily sweetener limit. Dr. Atkins recommends no more than three servings or packets of sweeteners per day. That means each Diet Coke with Splenda or packet of Splenda in your coffee is counted against that limit.

Why did he set the limit at three when the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) levels set by the FDA are usually much higher 6-10 cans of soda for Saccharin or Splenda depending on body weight? First, he of course urged to eat as much unprocessed food as possible, and adding additional chemicals to your diet or sweetened foods was never seen as a mainstay of the diet. It was also useful to break old eating habits of dessert following each meal. To reward yourself consistently with a "sweet." Your tongue or tastebuds could then begin to relearn how to taste the more subtle sweetness of vegetables and fruit. Finally he wanted to prevent the cephalic insulin reaction from stalling the diet followers. The more sweetness the greater likelihood of that insulin release.

Thanks for watching!

In a new two-year study on dieting, the low-carb Atkins diet had the most weight loss and lowest cholesterol levels. But other approaches had other benefits, reports Dr. Jon LaPook.

The Battle of the Diets: Is Anyone Winning (At Losing?) stanfordu... - 9,337 views - 1 year ago
January 17, 2008 presentation by Christopher Gardner for the Stanford School of Medicine Medcast lecture series.

The case for low-carbohydrate diets is gaining weight. Christopher Gardner, PhD, assistant professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, has completed the largest and longest-ever comparison of four popular diets using real-world conditions, which he discusses - the lowest-carbohydrate Atkins diet came out on top.

Atkins Diet: Induction Flu: Signs of Progress or Problems bowulf - 20,188 views - 2 years ago
It is very common that I read questions or statements from new Atkineers saying, "How come I feel so tired?" "Why do I have such a headache?" "I have no energy what is this diet doing to me!" One of the problems is no one forewarned them about Induction flu. Induction flu is simply the body burning its last remaining glucose and stored glycogen for energy, and suffering withdrawal effects. It is very similar to what happens when runners "hit the wall" and cyclist "bonk." In addition to the physical withdrawal symptoms there are the mental symptoms as well. Think of drug addict, are they necessarily pleasant to be around or in high spirits even though they are doing something good. Well the carb addict has the same reaction; I personally was irritable for the first 2 or 3 weeks as I had to figure out how to eat, exert control over what entered my mouth, and regain new comfort foods. It is a dramatic change, and some people resist change.

The good news is it is just temporary. It typically only last a few days, but for some the mental effects might last longer. It also shows you are on the right path and making true progress on getting rid of the excess fat. The silver lining is indeed that by the end if you continue the follow the plan you will be burning fat for fuel.

You'll have to watch the video for my suggestions on how to lessen the effects.

Atkins Diet Questions: Loose Skin bowulf - 34,054 views - 2 years ago
** Graphic Display of loose skin around my stomach near the end -- Viewers may want to ensure a bag is available **

Today's episode I deal with the one of the most common questions people ask me after hearing of my 200 pound weight loss. That is, "do you have much problems with loose skin?" In the end, I have to admit that I do have a bit of loose skin (I affectionately & sometime not so affectionately my "SharPei") around my torso and legs, but it could be much worse. I could have the sheets of skin some dieters (more often low Calorie big losers) have or even worse be my original weight still living in fear of loose skin. There are times that I actually like my stretchmarks as they server as reminders of what might be if I think I can lax up. It also serves as a talking point like my pathetic driver's license does for people looking for hope, but most days I am just thankful for shirts.

There are other things that are claimed to help, but I have not tried. Cocoa Butter and Mederma are both used by pregnant women to ease the appearance of stretchmarks. Additionally, I believe the content of this Diet helps in maintaining the elasticity due to protein and fat being featured. The body does not cannibalize its own resources like on other diets, and many report their skin looks as good and clear as it ever had. Good skin health implies good skin elasticity to respond to the weight loss as well.

One final theory about loose skin:
http://www.bodyfatguide.com/Lo oseSkin.htm
To summarize the above link, there is no problem with loose skin, just a body fat percentage problem. I am at 11-12% body fat, so maybe I need to drop another 2-3 percent yet too. In either case, plastic surgery may be for some people, but it's not for me.

Atkins Recipes: Mock Danish bowulf - 19,042 views - 2 years ago
I performed my first low carb cooking demonstration and showed the world the wonders of the mock danish. Mock danishes were one of the new comfort foods that I learned how to cook and was used to kill cravings that threatened the diet early on. Some qualifications for Kent's comfort foods were it had to be both easy and quick to make, and it could not have a lot of ingredients to prep. Most of the recipes, I will be demonstrating have my seal of approval for taste and ease in preparation. :-)

Here is the Mock Danish recipe:
2 oz Cream Cheese, softened
1 egg
1.5 - 2 tsp Splenda (**count against artificial sweetener count for the day)
1/2 tsp Vanilla
1 TBS Ground Flax meal (optional)

Topping
1 TBS Butter
.5 tsp Splenda
Dash Cinnamon

P90x Intro bowulf - 3,123 views - 1 year ago
In this video, I go into that I am starting something new. No, I am not giving up my low carb lifestyle, but I am definitely adding to it. I started doing P90x this week. I have been so impressed by others' progress on Youtube that I wanted to join them. I only hope I can match their performance.

Thanks to everyone else for posting their videos. They are incredibly helpful in keeping motivation and sense of community high.

P90x - Day 10 bowulf - 4,492 views - 1 year ago
# Week 1 Quick Results 1. 1 pound gained- probably water gain due to Creatine
2. 2 1/4" lost - probably not significant due to measuring inaccuracy
3. Did all videos except StretchX and 1 AbRipperX
4. I did 4 runs of 16.5 miles - the weather was great (missed my long run (double digit miles) due to having Fireman's training both Saturday and Sunday)

I am looking forward to my half marathon in a couple weeks and now focusing more on eating cleaner without the convenience foods. I keep trying to bring it and one up the previous week.

To see all the past uploads click on the UPLOADS button at the top of page or under the Uploads section, click on the "See All" link. I agree seeing them all in a straight line that's scrollable isn't as convenient or user friendly as before.

Kent, I'm trying to see all your old videos and I can't get them! I think it's because of this new channel design... personally I think it sucks. Anyway you can fix it so that we have access to all your old vids? I want to check out all your recipes!

Thanks!

Hello, I like your videos. My question is about soy milk. I like silk unsweetened natural soy milk. Is that an ok thing to have while trying to loose weight? I have yet to find any info on it and was just wondering. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Wow, that is great that you lost the weight you set for your goal, and have kept it off. I lost 20 pounds in 2004 but gained 15 back in the last couple of years.

Oh and i forgot to mention to make sure u are testing yourself to make sure u are in
Ketosis, that is very important. You can safely remain under 20 carbs for up to 1 year
I believe he said. I stayed under 20 for pretty much the whole 4 months, although
I did notice i was able to still be in Ketosis even when i consumed 30 carbs. :)
