DOM ZA VESANJE - HOUSE FOR HANGING - TIME OF THE GYPSIES. Directed by EMIR KUSTURICA, 1989.
Certificate: 15 - adult themes with some abusive language, and mild nudity, sex and violence.
In Serbian, Romani and Italian languages with English subtitles. 140 minutes.
Starring: Davor Dujmovic, Bora Todorovic, Ljubica Adzovic, Husnija Hasimovic, Sinolicka Trpkova, Elvira Sali. Filmed in: Shutka in Macedonia, and Rome.
Kusturica's magical-realist fable is a dark and hypnotic exploration of the family conflicts experienced by a young Romani man. The characters and their motivations are complex and controversial, often appearing tragic-comic and sympathetic, yet also sometimes predatory and criminal - Kusturica received some criticism for his portrayal of the negative aspects of Romani society, but most importantly, the film is resolutely haunting with beautiful cinematography, and is often regarded as Kusturica's best film.
The involved storyline warrants repeated viewings, with every scene full of symbolism and narrative clues - probably the greatest criticism is that the film deserved to be longer, in order to resolve the story with greater clarity. The first half of the film especially offers a unique insight into Shutka, the infamous 'city of the Gypsies' near Skopje.
To my knowledge, the film has never officially been given a commercial release on DVD, although the soundtrack has been available - the arrangements and interpretations of traditional Romani music by Goran Brecovic are put to particularly effective use throughout the film, especially the powerful anthemic refrain 'Ederlezi'. I wanted to make this excellent film available to the wider audience it deserves.
The subtitling is my own work. Please note that I have not always made literal 'word for word' translations - instead I have tried to concentrate on capturing the spirit of the characters and the narrative with appropriate English phrases. However, there are a couple of incidental scenes, not essential to the central narrative, where I feel I may not have done justice to the original screenplay, so please feel free to let me know if you can offer any improvements.
