Bluegrass - The Gordons - Goin' Home bluegrasb... - 611 views - 1 month ago
The Gordons perform "Goin' Home" from their 2002 release, "Time Will Tell Our Story". Joining The Gordons are Cecil Tinnon (Bull Harman colllaborator, Cumberland Gap) on mandolin and Bill Cross (Midnight Flight, The Greers Bluegrass Band, Barely Here) on bass.
Gary Gordon is playing a Gallagher acoustic guitar and Roberta Gordon is playing an Oscar Schmidt Appalachian Autoharp.

Meet Gary and Roberta Gordon. Influenced by the great music of their era, this husband and wife duo were baptized by bluegrass music and have made wonderful folk music ever since. Accompanied by Gary's tasteful Gallagher guitar and dobro, Roberta plays the American born Appalachian autoharp. With many recordings to their credit since 1976 , harmony singing is their signature.

The Gordons have been bringing their music to audiences throughout the United States since the 1970s, particularly in the Midwest and the Carolinas. During the 1970s, they released two records: "Southern Illinois Bluegrass", and "Covered Bridge", both of which received national radio airplay. In the late 1980s, they played a $150 per ticket show in Chicago, Illinois at the Swiss Grand Hotel. They also recorded a live concert in Cincinatti, Ohio at at the celebrated Old Time Music Hall , with special guests, dobro great Josh Graves and Kenny Baker (Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys).

In 1990, they explored a different sound with a country-rock record, "Wasn't Born to Follow", which featured fiddle great Wade Ray; in 1995, they released a gospel record, "Family Bible". Radio recognition was swift, and the single "Dust On The Bible" was praised in Europe as well as the U.S. Longtime broadcaster Dave Higgs of WPLN said: "I'll be spreading The Gospel According To The Gordons here in Nashville." 1997 brought "End Of A Long Hard Day" on Reception Records. Edward Morris of Billboard reviewed the record, and praised "the fidelity with which the group conjures up memories of a sweet rural world now long vanished".

In addition to touring the United States, European acceptance of "Family Bible" secured an invitation to tour Ireland in the mid-1990s, where they performed on RTE, Ireland's national television network, in addition to live radio programs. Richard Gladney of the Irish Bluegrass Music Club said: "Rest easy, Mr. Monroe. Your music is in good hands". The Gordons returned to Ireland three times, in addition to the Czech Republic and the Netherlands, where they took part in the first ever European World of Bluegrass Festival Series, held at venues throughout Holland, under the auspieces of the International Bluegrass Music Association. Strictly Country Records released "Live in Holland" in 1999, featuring Gary and Roberta returning to their duet roots, using only guitar, autoharp, dobro, and voice.

During this time, they also recorded songs for two projects under the name "Summervilla", recorded live in the historic anti-bellium mansion of the same name, located on the Cape Fear River in Eastern North Carolina.

In 2002, The Gordons released "Time Will Tell Our Story", featuring first-rate musicianship from the likes of Alison Brown (banjo) and fiddle from Robert Bowlin.Yet again, it was critically praised -- Bluegrass Unlimited stated that it was "one of the strongest spiritual releases of the year".

While Gary Gordon released a blues record, "Real Blue", in 2005, six years passed with little touring and visible activity from the duo. However, The Gordons never stopped writing, collecting, and recording songs. In 2008, they released "Our Time" on Inside-Out Records. Featuring fourteen songs, The Gordons impart fond reminders of childhood, hopefulness after loss, promise of redemption, and love of man. With the new release, Gary and Roberta will now head back out on the road to play as a duo once again.

Jennings and Keller - As The Universe Unfolds (CD Sampler) bluegrasb... - 153 views - 2 months ago
Jennings and Keller is Laurie Jennings Oudin and Dana Keller, an acoustic duo based out of Miami, Florida. They bring a wealth of experience to their collaboration, from the Broadway musicals of New York to the honky tonks of West Texas.

Their music is called "Fusion Folk Americana' - a blend of many different elements that comes from their vast and wide-ranging musical backgrounds. With the release of their debut CD, "Susan's House" (2007), and the follow-up CD, "As The Universe Unfolds" (2009), Jennings and Keller are quickly gaining recognition throughout the country. In 2007 alone, they were finalists in five songwriting contests across the nation: South Florida Folk Fest, Suwanee SpringFest, Susquehanna, SolarFest, and Falcon Ridge Folk.

Laurie Jennings Oudin is well-known as the former proprietress of The Main Street Cafe, which was viewed across the country as the premier acoustic music venue in Florida. A former Shakespearean actress, Laurie has been a singer and songwriter for many years. Since the cafe's close in June 2006, she has been devoting her time to her musical career with Dana.

Dana Keller is a veteran pedal steel, dobro, and guitar player who has spent years performing on stage or in the studio with such luminaries as Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Stevie Wonder, Larry Graham, Marvin Gaye, Dave Mason, Johnny Rodriguez and The Allen Brothers, to name a few. He has opened for, among others, Spirit, Pure Prairie League, Gordon Lightfoot, Waylon Jennings, and Buck Owens. Dana has been an endorsee of the Gretsch Guitar and Drum Company since 1980.

The synergy created from these two diverse talents is apparent in the responses they are getting from festival directors, club owners, and audience members. Laurie's and Dana's music is not easy to define, but will leave a lasting impression on all who listen.

Robert Bowlin - Eleven Point Sunset bluegrasb... - 451 views - 3 months ago
Robert Bowlin performs his composition, "Eleven Point Sunset". The song is on his Cd, "Six String Soliloquy". He is playing his new Whipple Creek Guitar made by Terry Whipple. www.whipplecreekguitars.com . More information is available at www.robertbowlin.com or www.myspace.com/robertbowlinmu sic . Video by Phil Bankester.

Robert Bowlin started at age 1 and a half playing the ukelele, graduated to his dad's guitar at age 5, and has been creating unique and beautiful guitar music ever since. He won the National Fingerpicking Guitar Championship in Winfield, KS in 1979 and got 2nd in the Flatpicking Guitar Contest in 1978. His professional career has included stints with artists such as Maura O' Connell, Kathy Mattea, Tom T. Hall, the Osborne Brothers, Bill Monroe, Ray Price, Bobby Bare, Faron Young, Ricky Van Shelton.

He was a session guitarist and fiddler in Nashville for countless recordings. He has played onstage with artists such as BB King and Ricky Scaggs, Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, and Vassar Clements. He has performed his original music on the stage of the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

He has a new cd of solo guitar instrumentals entitled "Six String Soliloquy". Here is what experts have to say:

"This recording is wonderful! It's mostly original instrumentals, a few traditional tunes and a Stephen Foster medley.Robert has a real gift for melody. You hear the original tunes and you feel like you've heard them before (but you haven't). When he plays a standard, like "Whisky Before Breakfast," he really makes it his own. His solo style doesn't sound like anyone elses. Robert blends Bluegrass, Jazz and other influences in a way that sounds natural and unforced. I would describe his phrasing as vocal. Many guitarists sound mechanical. He's just the opposite, milking every phrase for maximum feeling. And the tone he gets out of his 1930 Larson is just beautiful. He's not afraid of space and never adds unecessary notes that get in the way of hearing the melody. There are lots of guitarists these days who have great technique and can generate excitement with hot picking. Robert can certainly do the same. But there are few who work with the full range of emotion that is possible in music. These are medium and slow paced solos intended to move the listener. Though they'll appeal to any guitar playing person with an ear, they'll also appeal to others who don't care what kind of guitar he plays or whether or not he uses a custom made bevelled pick. Do you have a spouse who's tired of hearing your flatpicking CDs? Get this one and you'll both enjoy it!This is really one of the finest guitar recordings I've heard in years. It's only fault is that it's too short. I could listen to Roberts picking all day." - Dan Mozell

"His playing is really incredible - tasteful, passionate, and unique. He is a virtuoso flatpicker who is well-versed inmany styles. It's incredible that he's known primarily as a fiddler, havingbeen Monroe's "last" fiddle player.I recently judged him in a contest (Uncle Dave Macon Days in Murfreesboro,TN - www.uncledavemacondays.com), and he played an absolutely jaw-dropping"Waltz for Django" on that old Larson. Tone from now on!" - Boge Quinn

Wil Maring and Shady Mix - Daddy Said (Free Track Preview) bluegrasb... - 392 views - 3 months ago
Wil Maring and Shady Mix cover a Nanci Griffith tune, "Daddy Said".

Daddy Said
Nanci Griffith
Oh, I used to wish I was a hard line taker ... and they'd say,
"Six to one a half dozen'll break her",
'till I fell in love with a young man who sang the blues
Oh, bless my daddy, he warned me well
He'd whisper in my ear and say, "Now look out, gal ...
there's always a ne'er do well gonna call you the fool"

(chorus)
He said, "you'll never learn to fish on a borrowed line
you'll never learn to write if you're walkin' 'round cryin'
and it's a pity that you're lover died young, but ...
you'll never get tired of livin' alone".

So, now I dream of the lover that I don't know
It's safer this way 'cuz I don't have to go ... oh, and he
won't come ... so nobody goes away
Sometimes I wish for the warmth of his hand
take a look in these eyes and understand
I'm just a little too old to be a-learnin' the rules of the game

(repeat chorus)

Oh, maybe I could take him to Mexico
We'd kick our heels in the warm cloudy gulf
He'd sing a song about the weather in the Poconos;
this lover that I don't know
Then two hearts would pound 'stead of one in the night
I'd learn to fish with my own line
catch my dream and hope that line would hold

(repeat chorus)

No, I never get tired of livin' alone
Sometimes my feet get cold ... when I'm livin' alone ...

"Year of the Cat" guitar solo on acoustic guitar by Dave Nachmanoff bluegrasb... - 6,713 views - 4 months ago
Dave Nachmanoff plays the guitar solo of "Year of the Cat" on his acoustic guitar at a concert that he performed with Al Stewart.
"
www.davenach.com is his website

As a guitarist, Dave was very influenced the the acoustic lead of Maury Muehleisen, who played with Jim Croce and was killed in the same plane crash with him, also by Tim Renwick, Isaac Guillory and Peter White, all of whom played with Al Stewart. Mark Knopfler was a big influence and inspiration, and so was Django Reinhardt, the wonderful gypsy jazz guitarist and namesake of Dave's son.

Various classical and jazz composers probably factor in somewhere, and the classic standards of Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael and the Gershwins etc... all provide inspiration. Dave's tastes are pretty eclectic, but as long as there is some passion, expression and interesting content, it is all grist for the mill! "
