IT BEGAN IN THE YUCATAN - The Maya predicted that the world would end in 2012. But no one knew they'd be back to see to it themselves. The Black Road is a screenplay that follows a handsome rancher, a sexy college student and a small group of survivors as they face a zombie apocalypse first at a New Mexican ranch, and then on a rapid horseback retreat. The title is a reference to Maya lore that predicts that on December 21, 2012 "a black road to the underworld will open up," causing a global cleanse.

From the Sunday, December 23, 2012 edition of The Albuquerque Journal:
RAMAH, NEW MEXICO Not everyone is headed for a safety camp. A pair of terrified strangers took refuge at a rural ranch Saturday after the deadly infection that started in Mexico on Friday jumped the border. Despite the mandatory evacuation notice, they plan to stay put. "We're surrounded by irrigation ditches," says Henry the ranch's owner, who declined to give his last name.
"I was teachin' her how to shoot," says Quincy, 25, one of Henry's hands, as he nods to Amanda Geary, a sophomore at UNM who got marooned here on her way home, "when we noticed they don't even feel it 'less you hit 'em in the head!"
Geary hasn't been able to reach her parents, who live in Santa Rosa, Calif., "I wish I could tell them I'm OK, she says. I'm scared, but I'm glad Henry took me in. I'm learning a lot from him." Geary, a vegetarian, says she saw a lot of carnage yesterday and believes shooting the infected is justified.
Just before the crisis began, Henry says his neighbor, Abe, a member of the Hopi tribe, warned him of a day when what's below will be above and what's dark will be light. He wishes now he'd listened closer, but recalls that it had to do with some kinda black road to the underworld.
Is this the apocalypse? Henry doesn't know. He just knows that if it comes time to leave, he'll leave his truck behind. "Horse don't need refuelin'," he says. And as for Camp Safe Passage?
"Don't think it's a good idea. Bound to be a mesa around here we can camp out on if we have to."
