READ THE LINER NOTES...
Expanding on the channel main theme- 80s and 80s games/music. In the 90s Extreme music was a style I used to play - similar to this in some ways, and its still fun to check out from time to time.
Enter the first segment of the Extreme Music 101 course... today is a prologue for the people who stepped in here after watching the game vids, etc... along with some minor mix changes via me- bass brought out and mids dropped out you dont hear on the LP versions... 'Monolith style!' And yes- it was done on PURPOSE- to give the music that Monolith OOMPH!!!
Todays first offering is from Daath- rare instrumental 'pre production' versions of Subterfuge and Ovum- back to back.
I wanted to use this one as an intro to start off so people can 'hear' the intricacies and 'feel' the bass guitar that is more prominent in my mix with a 'grind' feel- without the overpowering vocals over the top. Vocals are usually the last item added in 'pre production', prior to final mix and last touches of the final production.
Prologue: In the 80s there was so much creativty combined with electronics. Back then you had some of the roots of electronic music with bands like Alock of Seagulls, Falco, kmfdm, the aliens who ate Thomas Dolby's Buick and many others...
Mainstream music at this point was very good, one of a kind, and unique. Even the 'material girl' Madonna- had guitar solos within her music. And from the hard rock world- Rush, Journey, Joan Jett, Billy Idol, DIO- to Def Leppard, Whitesnake and Europe, and other 'hair metal' that would follow in the later 80s...
Of course you had many of the games you see on my place- arcades then and ops with a couple of bucks in their pocket to put the best of music of the time and games together with strobes and other light fx creating some of the most unique interactive entertainment to this day.
In this period of the 80s- also Metallica emerge from the 'underground' and would put heavy metal and thrash on the map with their hit song 'One'. While many never heard of the band before- some of us were aware of them and what bands like Slayer, Testament, Forbidden, Exodus among others- were doing in the 'Bay Area Thrash' scene in San Fancisco in the 80s.
In the late 80s and early 90s- so much creativity was going on in the metal music world. All the bands coming out were as unique or moreso than their predecssors...
Death metal would combine fantasy lyrics and later- lyrics of thought and intelligence taking thrash metal to the next level. Grindcore would form from the roots of thrash and punk and hardcore bands, to be combined with lyrics regarding social issues, politics, and even items someone attempting to obtain a Ph D. in surgical procedures- would be proud of.
Both forms of music were not for the faint of heart. Many of which were never played on radio- as documented in Napalm Deaths- Vision Conquest with a radio being tuned in from white noise to the start of the song... one I will be posting at a later time possibly.
There was also another style to combine progressive rock and heavy metal- bands like Symphony X, Dream Theater, Nevermore, and Liquid Tension Experiment (a band i mixed with a Space Duel video recently) that was successful as well among other new 'genres' of metal music...
Death metal and Grindcore their own ways- offered some of the most complex and fastest musical structures. And some of the most intricate guitar solos, combined with other instrumentation or sound fx.
It has been said that some forms of metal, especially these, are what are would parallel 'classical music' of today due to the prowess required to play it.
These styles- along with thrash- are the classics that forged the 'Extreme music' many of the next generation of fans take part in today from bands such as Fear Factory, Atreyu, Killswitch Engage, among others...
I guess being a musician from that time period and involved in the scene, I just appreciate the uniqueness of the music you would not hear on the radio. It was intense and interesting... a network of 'tape traders' would exchange tapes and ideas, and all fans at the show- it was more like a mini woodstock with people slam dancing and moshing- then have a drink with friends and chat with the bands afterward- it always a blast. The extreme metal genres established cult followings of their own. And some of the bands, are still maintaining careers of 20+ years amidst changes within the music scene.
Daath would emerge to the front of the scene formally in 2007 with their acclaimed album The Hinderers.
Stundents from Berklee College of Music would come out and offer some of the most interesting and experimental extreme music in many years. Additoinally, Daath would have their song- From the Blind- featured in the Guitar Hero series of videogames today.

First off- I'd like to say thanks to those of you who made the 'advanced play' video - hit 1000 views recently.
When I originally started posting videos, I never would have thought Popeye would be my 'most viewed' video. I thought other games- especially this one- and others like Tron, Stargate, and some others I have up... would hit 10,000 hits long before Popeye did recently. I guess when it comes to classics, the Donkey Kongs and Pac / Ms Pacs, etc- still rule the world due to popularity- and there are always better things 'below the surface'.
There are so many others- like this one, that were more advanced, that were more unique- and had better gameplay- than some of the 'flagship games' people remember the most.
I remember a time in Chicagoland- a time Where Midway and Williams and two other local MFR's ruled my local realm anyway- a time when even Atari had to send its flagship products here years ago to compete in the 'competitions market' and obtain some 'real estate of their own'. The hometown products outnumbered anyone else that was an outsider. My local 'cade back then had a dedicated MH I honed my skills on.
I remember the days of the classic games that were 'off the beaten path'- such as this one that I dropped my tokens in many times like my peers then- there were so many games out there- some that just made those Donkey Kongs and Pac / Ms Pacs- look like they were 2nd class... some were just not readily available- everywhere...
This one- was one of them. Produced in small numbers as it were... I'm sad to have learned that vector monitors never reached the reliability rate of 'rasters'. I won't delve too much into the question/idea- I have read the rumors on the web that Atari wanted to make this a 'raster' aka regular color monitor game- in order to ship more units. I wonder how Agent X (aka Cloak and Dagger) and Major Havoc would have taken off as a tandem duo selling point for Atari with thousands of units of each as dedicated units- 'ready to go'- had that happened. Either way- both are fantastic games... and two on the 'wish list' for the atari wing of my 'Dreamcade' goal...
In any event...
My idea with this vid and the Popeye milestone videos is to show off the 'atract mode' to the games. A lot of home system games today- have no preview- you jump right into an options or whatever screen at startup. That wasn't the case back then. Attract modes drew in a prospective player- with a story line or basic gameplay demo... telling them- this is why you drop 25c into me, and if you don't... something happens or something is really wrong with you! ;)
Levels 11 and 15 are definitely my favorite of the MH game- between the spinner maze and the gravity boots. I couldn't fit it in here due to time constraints...
Onto the video: Both items below Work on dedicated units as well.
Power on:
1 undocumented feature ---------------------- After power on- roll your 'roller' (dedicated cabinet)- spinner or trackball, etc for non-dedicated variants (conversions and mame etc), to the left. Many of us would do this to see and talk about who did what on the scoreboard in the previous week back then...
As you see here- you skip the catastrofighter leaving the hangar bay. High score table is displayed, as well as basic gameplay info, (Perkoids! - 2 creamers and 1 sugar!) and the major havoc story, along with a random music effect. Sometimes there is one- other times- there is not...
1 bug - level 14... 'addendum' ------------------------------ Level 14 addendum to 'advanced play' it is hard to play the perfect game in any video. I've seen the comments... the main vanguard guy only worth 1000 points?
In any event - level 14- redone, the right way. Your cannon lost this time Mr. Cearny. :) LOL And the bug...
Hold the shield, enter the escpe pod... it stays on the whole time. I know- its not as a well documented bug as the 'finger' bug... and it doesnt do anything miraculously like start the level over... but it sounds like a mosquito and is funny to watch. I'd still like to see the guy that can supposedly exit the bottom of one of the levels in this game and 'see a suprise'- and put that one up out here...
Thanks to those of you who had a kind word and compliment to share- this is for you...
I apologize in advance for it not being 'perfect play'. I've played this maybe 6 times since last video set was made (over a year ago) and different hardware is being used today that is not up to the challenge of the previous video set hardware.
Enjoy -Hawk
