This is footage from the Start! party in Boston taken around 2002 by Start staff... this was originally intended for the website but never quite made it... found on an unlabeled CD during a recent house cleanup, this footage can best be described as "Youth."
"Start!" was the first 18+ Electro/Indie/Post-Punk night in Boston, founded in 2001 by Gibby Miller (Makeoutclub.com, Dais Records, Louderbach) and Damian Genuardi (The Explosion, Blonde Acid Cult) with the help of Matt Galle and Jeff Marshall - in an effort to fill the void between house parties that were busted quickly by the cops and the overpriced (15-20$ covers) 21+ clubs in the area.
Start! was 18+, had an 8 dollar cover, and offered 1.50 draft beers (unheard of at the time), and is credited with popularizing the electro sound in Boston.
The night ran from September 7th 2001 (started at bills bar) to the end of 2003 where it finished at Axis' upstairs.
During its run START was held at Bills Bar, Paradise, Axis Downstairs and Axis Upstairs with special offnight parties at other locations.
Start hosted many bands during it's three years, among them:
Interpol (their first and second Boston shows were at Start!), Xiu Xiu, Black Dice, Panthers, The Kills, Hong Kong Counterfeit, Milemarker, Mark Robinson, The Walkmen, Gravytrain, ARE Weapons, and others.
Start also boasted a huge array of guest DJs in it's prime, among them:
Belle and Sebastian, Hugo from Gang of Four, Mark Robinson from Teenbeat Records/Unrest, Gregg Foreman of Making Time and Delta 72, Dave P and Mike Z of Making Time (Philly), Peter Prescott from Mission of Burma, Carlos D of Interpol fame, Rueben from Ladytron, and others.
Start! was often compared to Club Spit, the original 1980's club that inhabited Start's final home at Club Axis on Lansdowne Street.
