2nd worst CGI ever BenMcEwan - 307 views - 2 weeks ago
Got some reflections happening both on the character, and on the desk :)
I made this one a while ago, and just decided to upload it to fill the empty void.

If you've got a sharp eye and something doesn't look right, it's because I was lazy and didn't composite it properly (it was rendered straight out of 3ds Max), so the colours are slightly off, and the blur/grain/focus on the biped doesn't match the footage. I also didn't render it with motion blur, so it looks weird.. If you didn't notice that, forget you ever read that last paragraph :)

There's some more live-action stuff coming in a few months, I'm just short of spare time! I know I always say new stuff is coming, but I can prove it :) I present to you a screenshot of the new vfx test that reveals absolutely nothing about what it's about!

Worst CGI Ever BenMcEwan - 1,372 views - 6 months ago
Got bored rotoscoping so I took a break and tried my hand at a bit of CGI! The video quality sucks because I forgot to interpret the footage properly in Boujou before I tracked it and I didn't want to re-do everything =P

I don't know why there's no "Watch in HD" option this time around, but you can watch it in HD at Vimeo:
http://vimeo.com/2590395

I accidentally came up with this crazy little energy ball thingo whilst doing something for work, so I decided to film some footage and chuck it in there to see how it looked!

Keep in mind that this was a very quick and dirty comp, and is by no means perfect at all. I just wanted to upload something new for all the subscribers, since I've been so bogged down and unable to do anything lately!

Houdini Demo Reel 2008 HD houdini3d - 3,502 views - 7 months ago
In 2008, Houdini artists have created an impressive portfolio of commercial and feature film work. The visual effects and animation projects come from all over the world and feature renowned studios such as Pysop, Asylum, Rising Sun Pictures, Rhythm and Hues, and The Mill.

Star Wars Kid... The Second BenMcEwan - 3,801 views - 1 year ago
What happens when you're working on another project that you just can't get right? Ditch it for a while then take your lightsaber outside and muck around!

Seriously, I tried to look extremely goofy like that star wars kid video, but it just turned out looking awesome-ish.

I think this is the only video I've made that I can say that the effects are awesome (except for the burn marks, they suck ass)

Thanks a bunch to Majed Elass who did the sound effects for me =)
The music is called "To Victory". It's from the 300 sound track.

Enjoy!

Missing Eye BenMcEwan - 11,649 views - 1 year ago
Well I was extremely unhappy with the last eye replacement vfx test that I did, so what better to do than redo it!! This time, I strapped off Andrew Kramer completely! Hooray for un-originality! I couldn't think of anything else though, seriously!

I would say it was perfect, but YouTube's compression stuffed up the shadow on the eye, which is what made this effect look so realistic! In my opinion, it's still pretty decent...

------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ------------------------------ ----------

I meant to put this in my 2-part Vlog, but I forgot:

Along side my new additions in 2008 will be quite a few remakes of old vfx tests I did a few years back. This is because the ideas I had back then are still the most awesome ideas I've got now! Re-doing my favorites will be fun because of my new camera's supreme quality and my vfx skills are a lot better then they were 2 years ago.

Never fear, there will still be a sh**load of awesome new ideas coming this year too!

TUTORIAL
THe tutorial has been updated and is now being hosted by AEtuts.com. You can find it here:

I'm not sure what to call this really, but I made it because of the positive comments about the light streak in the graffiti clip. I thought I should implement it onto some footage.

Hope that helps!

Welcome to Ben McEwan's little corner of YouTube. It's filled with mainly short visual effects tests, but some short films are on their way pretty soon!
About Me: Hey, I'm Ben.

As you can probably tell by my channel, I'm pretty obsessed with visual effects. I often have freelance (means I work for myself, not a company) work in visual effects since I'm still at school, but would really like to branch out and work for a company in the visual effects industry. My life ambition is to move to LA or somewhere similar and work for a big visual effects house like ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) or Digital Domain, and hopefully get an Oscar out of it!
Hometown:
Canberra, Australia
Country:
Australia
Occupation:
Compositor - Disktech Digital + Freelance VFX
Companies:
Aurellia
Hobbies:
Visual effects (of course), writing short films even though most of them will probably never be made, making movies (mainly shorts) and mucking round with friends!
Movies:
Iron Man, Transformers, Heroes, Family Guy, Balls of Steel, Star Wars Saga, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Matrix Trilogy, Fast and the Furious Movies, etc. I generally like Actions, Sci-Fis and comedies.
Music:
Linkin Park, Ronald Jenkees, AC/DC, Guns and Roses, Julia Nunes, Breaking Benjamin, Weird Al Yankovic, Weezer and the Iron Man soundtrack... I'm into lots of different genres, but the most part is pretty much Pub Rock and Alternative Rock.
Books:
I don't read books, they bore me...

hey quick question, I watched the vid copilot timefreeze tutorial. Seems pretty straightforward. You have an idea how to do a slow down instead of a complete stop? I might just have to do a time stop over and over again in small increments but was hoping there would be an easier way. Any suggestions? thanks.

As an early guess, who do you think will win the LCC? As first pick I would say whiteley, then silentbat, and either vaportrail or tumblemonster. Of course, stills can be misleading... but still what do you think?

Jing is a real pain in the rear. Unless you purchase the full version, it only uploads to screencast. But I got ahold of Camtasia now which works better anyway. And my pc is up and running. Don't have to use my laptop.
