Isn't there always the possibility of not being able to get your parachute open right/in time before you hit the ground in base jumping?

How do you get the parachute open? Pull a strap on your belt or shoulder or something?

I been watching your videos for a little while now, your one of the reasons i want to be a base jumper. I finally went for my first skydive the other day.
