Bhairvi a morning raag is often sung at all times due to its immense popularity. It was traditionally sung at the end of an all night mehfil of Khayal as the sun rose in order to send the audience home with a final sweet sensation.

Most of the bandishein that are associated with it are romantic and are sung in Thumri, Daadra, Tappey, Kaafi and other light forms but not pure Khayal.

The tragic romance ended when Sassi died in the desert searching for her beloved Punnu.
