Before I give you the details about this latest MJ tribute, I must admit that I am NOT a fan of most tributes, to me a majority of them play like attempts to cash in on the passing of an instant hitmaker. Dont get me wrong, I respect that many artists are showing some love, I am just saying that I dont feel it half the time.
Now here enters LL Cool J, what makes his tribute so special for me is the simple fact that he credits Michael for penning it. Yup, you heard right... Michael Jackson is literally a ghostwriter now (does his talents know no boundaries?!). Think what you want about that but I have to give props to LL for coming out admitting that he dreamt of Michael giving him these lyrics on a piece of paper. Most people would have cut and run with the credit.
With that said, I DO have some quarrels with the chosen words themselves. Whether the dream-sequence is a clever gimmick to generate interest or if LL really believes Michael's words were heaven sent. I find it hard to swallow that Michael would proclaim that he got away with anything.
Michael has always stood by his innocence, I dont think death would change that. Nor do I believe that Michael is laughing down at people who did him wrong in life from up above. He was a gentle, compassionate and most of all, a forgiving person. Well except for in the cases of Tommy Mottola and Tom Sneddon. And dont get me started on that Paul McCarthy line, that was just plain wrong on so many levels.
Content aside, LL's flow is nice over Billie Jean's beats and he injects Michael with some swagger that the KOP himself was too humble to pull off. These are just 2 more things that solidifies the respect I have for LL. There is no doubt in my mind that this tribute came from the heart, I only wish LL would have worded some things a bit differently.
Discuss.
