There was NO Wudang style before 19.century. This style as imported to Wudang Zi Xiao temple by Sun Lu Tang in 1926. It is obviously a variant of Sun style demonstrated by this taoist master. :-)
I'm training in this and I love it! I'm glad that my Shrfu's have put so much time and dedication to the art. Many other schools in my area don't have this. I'm learning Xing Yi Quan, Ba-Gua, and Tai-Chi. And how big or strong you are does NOT matter. I'm not that big, and I could probably beat someone twice my size.
And if you think that you can kick his ass i want see that. Many kung fu teachers come to wudang and realize that they suck. It's doesn't mathers how big muscles you have, they will hit stronger then you and faster.
yes i was practise in wudang at master yuan one time. but other styles. i started practise xing yi this year in february. so in summer i fly fly to wudangshan for practise this stuff!
grow some balls go kick his ass and show us how good you are then... go kick his ass,, that's what i thought, you can't! all can you do is talking shit on youtube like a pussy!! get off youtube and make a video of yourself beat him up!! yeah pussy!
I'm training, krav and some bjj, had training in kickboxing and I've been training for about ten years, and yeah, one of my friends can defnately kick my ass and has kicked other's asses in the street using that "shit". Chinese martial art's rep has been ruined by shitty instructors in the west, but in China there are guys that can shatter bricks with the back or their wrist. I've learned some respect for a culture that has been fighting without firearms for the last 4,000 years.
20 years ago I thought kung fu was BS. I was a powerlifter who could deadlift 600+lbs and had trained in boxing. When I started in Karate I was able to use my boxing to outspar brownbelts, even though I was a white bel. And if they did hit me I didn't care because I had 240 lbs of muscle to absorb their kicks.
Then I sparred with a Ba Gua/Tai Chi teacher. I outweighed this guy by 80 lbs, and he tossed me around like a stuffed animal. The harder I tried, the more be bounced me.
But I would agree that the reputation of Chinese martial arts has suffered because of a lack of truly qualified teachers. There are a lot of guys calling themselves "sifu" and "master" who haven't put in the hard work to earn those titles.
@WingChunGeologist It's not that they aren't qualified it's that the focus has changed. People are now drawn to the flash and style of contemporary wushu. Which isn't a bad thing by itself, the techniques are still there it's just that people don't understand the application behind the movements they're doing and not many wushu schools even teach the combat applications anymore.
More internal styles like Xing Yi and Bagua, and Tongbei are focused almost entirely on application.
@SimKoning It's the other way around.. It's the little chinese guys who are fake masters usually, just cuz they got the looks of it. Some of the best masters are in Australia and San Francisco, but also many places around the world. Don't be fooled just because the guy is chinese.. it means nothing.
@INDUSTRIAL3X yeah man, exactly. you just never know. i am from the usa, am of mixed blooded caucasion (white) and native american (cree) ancestry, and was raised in a christian scientist household (the people famous for not taking pharmaceutical medicine- actually they think life is spiritual not material so they abstain) and i train chinese kungfu, both neijia (tai ji, xing yi, qigong) and external (hua quan, etc) people raise their eyebrows at me, have no idea why i practice, lol. oh well.
@SimKoning i believe one of the most common misconceptions about the world today is that "the west ruined it" when in fact, the world as a whole has ruined a great many things, sure the west took part, but it is not solely to blame, even in china, u go to china and theres a "shaolin temple" on every street corner, and they sure arent real, the world is to blame, not the west
@kapoof2 Even in China it's become very commercial. In general the interest in these things has died off. A close friend of mine is studying Chinese medicine at an accredited school and has said a good many of his teachers believe that these arts are dying out in the east but that they'll be saved in the west.
it still affects a few things and I'm going to need major therapy to get a true range or control from my legs for anything other than low kicks but my root has still improved greatly and my range of motion make me interesting as a few sparring partners have put it. I do a lot to make my hands capable of dealing with the detriment of not having full leg use yet.
every person commenting on this video talks entirely too much. Just enjoy the video and stop using youtube as an arguement ground. I study all the major external and some internal styles of shaolin kung fu. Due to numerous injuries and "burnout" from years of competition. Lately ive been focusing on Xing yi,sanda, and other forms of martial arts that I have not yet been trained in.Internal arts are much more healthy and productive, but I when iam old, I will miss all the flying kicks and crazy action
Northern Shaolin Lohan Pai here as well as Yang Tai Chi though I'm not very good at either. I was also taught a decent degree of the basics of wing chun when younger due to having a light case of cerebral palsy.
does the CP still bother you? I know a guy. He was awesome at karate. But, the right side of his body became paralyzed from something like CP. He gain some function back, but im amazed, because he still practices and competes!
Wushu directly translated = WAR. Theres no such thing called Kung Fu, it's true name is Gong Fu. Gong = hard work, Fu = man - put together: person who became an expert through hard work. Wushu Gong Fu is war-"kung fu" Gong Fu is often divided into two schools - north and south. For example, the gibbon style Toang Bai Chuan from the north with long armed movements and jump kicks contra the south style Hung Gar which relies more on getting close to the opponent, strong stances with elbows kept in.
And another thing. The internal forms aren't practiced by toddlers. They're still working through their pre-naval Qi. And thats what they use for a long time after. Fact being, Shaolin is one of the very few cultures that practice martial arts that early. And for the most part its for disciplinary purposes, and to give them the drive to devote they're lives to the culture they were born into.
Yes, it is a big call. But slightly incorrect... Baguazhang cant be mastered, its an every flowing revolving style that is entirle y endless so in a word or so I suppose Sifu would be appropriate.
Since this video comment page has not yet come to its inevitable attack of MMA vs. Internal martial arts debates, I would like to say a few words to those who would like to start one. *ahem* 1. nobody agrees with you, so stop trying to change their minds. 2. just to counter the argument I know is coming: If it wasn't effective in fighting, it wouldn't have lasted so many centuries.
His moves show great variety, skill, and experience all canon to Xing Yi. Xing Yi is not supposed to look good. But he is so good and relaxed at it that looks become one with intent. In a traditional Han outfit, practicing to the tune ancient Chinese guqin music with electronic undertones, such martial artists are rare indeed.
I think we'd better call Pao-Chui be "Shot", it sounds more clearly than "cannon". Western guys can not understand that, they don't use a noun as a verb, that is their difference to Chinian.
Well, his xingyi isn't BAD, and is probably effective. But, it seems a bit stiff. Then again, he is in a hurry. And for all I know I may look worse at combat speed! :P Nevertheless, I've seen better combat speed xingyiquan, no doubt about it.
why should I have to show you if I can do it better? So no one can evaluate something unless they can do it or do it better? Don't be an asshat. Further, you have but to carefully read my comment to see that I provided for the possibility of not doing it better, and that should have sufficed, unless you want to be an asshat.
I'm going to report you, Mr.Criticize but can't do better and is afraid of showing me a better example even though I am giving you a chance to show someone else's video rather than yours.

what's with the conspiracy theories? I read an interview w/ a head priest there who could trace his lineage back several generations. they've included wushu and such in their training to make money, not because of some conspiracy. There are still traditionalists at the shaolin temple as well.

Funny, when I was at Wudang in 2005 the priests I spoke to definitely were daoshi and not state placed. Mind you, I'm a Sinologist and know far more about Daoism than about martial arts and never asked which they practice and was more interested in the ritual...
There's really little point in showing the real martial art on camera. Wushu looks better on film and the rest is either practice or too lethal... well, that's my opinion.
Wushu is the performance version of any martial art. In fact, wushu MEANS martial art. Any martial arts style has a version which is meant for competitions, demonstrations, etc, where the movements are more exaggerated. There are certain features which are common to wushu, but that basically means = Flashy Stuff.
wushu is kungfu, it a style of martial art, like karate, aikido, taikwando, it a style, this is xiying which often refer to as 5 elements, 12 animal, not really sure what that means, but it not really wushu.
You should check your definition of wushu. I'm pretty sure it is NOT a martial art. You can never have someone use "wushu" against "karate". Just the fact that you only named Japanese and Korean martial arts shows you don't really know much about Chinese ones. Wushu is either the sport or martial arts in general. And, in xingyi and many other martial arts, the 5 elements are the kinds of force used and the 12 animals are the modes in which one moves. Monkey being very active and teasing, etc.
Wushu translates to "war arts", in china they don't practice kung fu (energy and time) they practice wushu. But good wushu takes an enormous amount of kung fu, which defines the link between the two words. And there are many wushu styles xingyi being one. And then of course there is the discrace that is modern wushu, but i am going to ignore that.
Actually, and i say this with disgust because no one here knows what they're talking about, Wushu means "martial art"... The very fact of you saying this means you have no clue yourself... and to let you know.... Karate is a Chin Na, a self-defense mechanism... You shouldn't try to teach others if you don't know for yourself... It leads to ignorance in others, and false stories about things that have taken century's to build to the status they're in...
Kung Fu isn't about brute forcing, it's about internal power...which is far more superior than brute forcing like the western wrestling :) Using internal power can destroy organs, bones, and internally injure the target.
PS. Thai Boxing > All boxings. If you don't know, many boxers respect Thai Boxing because they are just too powerful for them ;)
yeah, yeah, yeah. any aspiring (true) kung fu practitioner seeks the knowlege that has taken some a decade or two to learn\(of). at the risk of being redundant, form leads to function as the asians and indians of india had to develope these techniques. they have a tendancey to look down their noses at "brute force" as they are so fond of calling it. despite what you may believe you need force to execute technique and i know both and they by genetics can only have one.
No. Kung Fu is NOT all internal... Kung Fu is broken into 2 groups. The Internal and the External. Taiji, Bagua, Xing Yi are only 3 of the many internal forms that are involved in Kung Fu. For the record I practice ALL 3... The whole thing that says Internal and External are different is only true in the fact of the Qi work...Internal forms cultivate Qi to make power while External Uses Power and Force to cultivate Qi. All styles can do those things you've mentioned. Not all Kung Fu is the same.
Ba Ji... Tong Bei... There not internal? i dont understand our logic. Do you mean Gung Fu? Because then your right. But there are only 3 Orthodox Internal Arts.
Haha. Sorry, but you have your facts a little bit mixed up. There a more than just 3. There is the Eight Trigram Palm, Mind-Fist Boxing, Grand Ultimate Fist, Water Boxing, and some others. Look into it. You'll learn something new.
I'm aware that there are other internal styles, but these three are considered the "main" ones if that's possible, the others are more rare and not as well known. Out of curiosity, isn't 8 Trigrams part of Baguazhang? In fact the training they operate around revolves around the 8 trigrams. Perhaps it's a derivative of Bagua? Just asking. One more thing, could you describe the last three styles you listed, I'm curious to know what they're about?
They are more focused around Taoism, than other martial arts, but I suppose it is possible they are similar in some fashions. The last styles I mentioned are both complex and hard to explain. There should be a variety of websites that explain. I hope I helped you out.
Xing YI, Ba Gua, and Tai Ji are the three styles Sun Lu Tang was referring to when he first coined the term "internal family" (and unknowingly caused the later misunderstanding between internal and external). Luo He Bei Fa Quan was not part of the three styles first dubbed to be the "internal family," though both it and others (such as Yi Quan) certainly adhere to the same core principles.
Technically, the entire "internal and external" separation is a misnomer...the two are intertwined indefinitely, and there was no separation before Sun Lu Tang grouped the three "pillar" internals as one family. I was just saying that someone who states Tai Ji, Ba Gua, and Xing Yi are the only three internal styles wouldn't necessarily be incorrect...provided they were speaking of terminology and not principle.
My aim was to dispel the current "internal or external," black and white comparison
Speaking in the Daoist mindset I can see your logic. But not many people think in such a way, so I try to explain it in an everyday understanding logic.
Kung Fu isn't about brute forcing, it's about internal power...which is far more superior than brute forcing like the western wrestling :) Using internal power can destroy organs, bones, and internally injure the target.
PS. Thai Boxing > All boxings. If you don't know, many boxers respect Thai Boxing because they are just too powerful for them ;)
secondly, if you know anything about preserving chi you should know that the powers of chaos and harmony are opposites yet exist in paradoxical state. tai boxers are powerful for a time as it wears the body and internal kung fu sustains longevity. ill not get into the particulars as i dont have the space and time nor the will to insult you by regurgitating common knowledge of why internal artist at 80 are still formidable opponents on all levels of war and cultivated strategies.
Western Boxing is in no way inferior to the internal arts. Your sixteen years old and an ignorant fool. My main style is baguazhang, and i STILL disagree with you. Any style can damage organs or hit vital points. Any style can rupture bone or splinter it. For the record... You cannot make chi leave your body... You cant shove your schi into someone else. It doesnt work like that. You can redirect it in individuals but you cant hit people with it and shove it into them.
Nice clip. Xing Yi movements remind me of my Pa Kua lineage. Great stuff.

Funny, when I was at Wudang in 2005 the priests I spoke to definitely were daoshi and not state placed. Mind you, I'm a Sinologist and know far more about Daoism than about martial arts and never asked which they practice and was more interested in the ritual...

this is very good, no real shen fa it looks like wushu to me
wenwu 5 years ago
There's really little point in showing the real martial art on camera. Wushu looks better on film and the rest is either practice or too lethal... well, that's my opinion.

This isnt Wushu........
XhessCake 4 years ago
Wushu is the performance version of any martial art. In fact, wushu MEANS martial art. Any martial arts style has a version which is meant for competitions, demonstrations, etc, where the movements are more exaggerated. There are certain features which are common to wushu, but that basically means = Flashy Stuff.
romansampo 4 years ago
Hmmzz never seen it like that, always thought that Wushu was the Communist version of Martial arts. I know what WUshu means =P
XhessCake 4 years ago
wushu is kungfu, it a style of martial art, like karate, aikido, taikwando, it a style, this is xiying which often refer to as 5 elements, 12 animal, not really sure what that means, but it not really wushu.
tanminh 3 years ago
You should check your definition of wushu. I'm pretty sure it is NOT a martial art. You can never have someone use "wushu" against "karate". Just the fact that you only named Japanese and Korean martial arts shows you don't really know much about Chinese ones. Wushu is either the sport or martial arts in general. And, in xingyi and many other martial arts, the 5 elements are the kinds of force used and the 12 animals are the modes in which one moves. Monkey being very active and teasing, etc.
romansampo 3 years ago
Wushu translates to "war arts", in china they don't practice kung fu (energy and time) they practice wushu. But good wushu takes an enormous amount of kung fu, which defines the link between the two words. And there are many wushu styles xingyi being one. And then of course there is the discrace that is modern wushu, but i am going to ignore that.
TaoistSoldier 3 years ago
Basically, Wushu is a sport, and Kungfu is using a part of a form(you learn from Wushu) in a real fight.
People created forms to make it easier to remember the "ways" to attack/defend/etc.
Kungfu doesn't just mean fighting, to the Chinese, there are "Kungfu" in cooking, etc.
sYncZed 3 years ago
Actually, and i say this with disgust because no one here knows what they're talking about, Wushu means "martial art"... The very fact of you saying this means you have no clue yourself... and to let you know.... Karate is a Chin Na, a self-defense mechanism... You shouldn't try to teach others if you don't know for yourself... It leads to ignorance in others, and false stories about things that have taken century's to build to the status they're in...

and yet no matter how hard they try, they cannot get american actor to look good in fight scene, weird huh.

i dont know i guess its form leads to function. since asians made kung fu but, asians look funny boxing and wrestling in real fights?
opticannon 3 years ago
Kung Fu isn't about brute forcing, it's about internal power...which is far more superior than brute forcing like the western wrestling :) Using internal power can destroy organs, bones, and internally injure the target.
PS. Thai Boxing > All boxings. If you don't know, many boxers respect Thai Boxing because they are just too powerful for them ;)
sYncZed 3 years ago
yeah, yeah, yeah. any aspiring (true) kung fu practitioner seeks the knowlege that has taken some a decade or two to learn\(of). at the risk of being redundant, form leads to function as the asians and indians of india had to develope these techniques. they have a tendancey to look down their noses at "brute force" as they are so fond of calling it. despite what you may believe you need force to execute technique and i know both and they by genetics can only have one.
opticannon 3 years ago
BaguazhangMaster 3 years ago
Those are not the "only" 3...
Ba Ji, Tong Bei...etc.
crshieh 3 years ago
Ba Ji... Tong Bei... There not internal? i dont understand our logic. Do you mean Gung Fu? Because then your right. But there are only 3 Orthodox Internal Arts.
BaguazhangMaster 3 years ago
There are only three internal Martial Arts which are: Baguazhang, Xingyiquan, and Taijiquan.
kitsune511 3 years ago
Haha. Sorry, but you have your facts a little bit mixed up. There a more than just 3. There is the Eight Trigram Palm, Mind-Fist Boxing, Grand Ultimate Fist, Water Boxing, and some others. Look into it. You'll learn something new.
BaguazhangMaster 3 years ago
I'm aware that there are other internal styles, but these three are considered the "main" ones if that's possible, the others are more rare and not as well known. Out of curiosity, isn't 8 Trigrams part of Baguazhang? In fact the training they operate around revolves around the 8 trigrams. Perhaps it's a derivative of Bagua? Just asking. One more thing, could you describe the last three styles you listed, I'm curious to know what they're about?
Thanks!
kitsune511 3 years ago
They are more focused around Taoism, than other martial arts, but I suppose it is possible they are similar in some fashions. The last styles I mentioned are both complex and hard to explain. There should be a variety of websites that explain. I hope I helped you out.
BaguazhangMaster 3 years ago
Mind Fist Boxing is Xing Yi, Grand Ultimate Fist is Tai Chi, and Water Boxing is Luo He Bei Fa Quan.
BaguazhangMaster 3 years ago
Xing YI, Ba Gua, and Tai Ji are the three styles Sun Lu Tang was referring to when he first coined the term "internal family" (and unknowingly caused the later misunderstanding between internal and external). Luo He Bei Fa Quan was not part of the three styles first dubbed to be the "internal family," though both it and others (such as Yi Quan) certainly adhere to the same core principles.
theMAG101 3 years ago
Yes however now in this time there are more than 3 internal martial arts. Firstly yes. But I'm speaking of the current day, not of the past.
BaguazhangMaster 3 years ago
Technically, the entire "internal and external" separation is a misnomer...the two are intertwined indefinitely, and there was no separation before Sun Lu Tang grouped the three "pillar" internals as one family. I was just saying that someone who states Tai Ji, Ba Gua, and Xing Yi are the only three internal styles wouldn't necessarily be incorrect...provided they were speaking of terminology and not principle.
My aim was to dispel the current "internal or external," black and white comparison
theMAG101 3 years ago
...that is so prevalent in many circles....not to say anyone is right or wrong between you and kitsune511. Sorry if it came off as a correction.
theMAG101 3 years ago
Speaking in the Daoist mindset I can see your logic. But not many people think in such a way, so I try to explain it in an everyday understanding logic.

secondly, if you know anything about preserving chi you should know that the powers of chaos and harmony are opposites yet exist in paradoxical state. tai boxers are powerful for a time as it wears the body and internal kung fu sustains longevity. ill not get into the particulars as i dont have the space and time nor the will to insult you by regurgitating common knowledge of why internal artist at 80 are still formidable opponents on all levels of war and cultivated strategies.
opticannon 3 years ago
Western Boxing is in no way inferior to the internal arts. Your sixteen years old and an ignorant fool. My main style is baguazhang, and i STILL disagree with you. Any style can damage organs or hit vital points. Any style can rupture bone or splinter it. For the record... You cannot make chi leave your body... You cant shove your schi into someone else. It doesnt work like that. You can redirect it in individuals but you cant hit people with it and shove it into them.
