who is gonna hear a fast rapper and think to themselves, "I wanna sound like that; I can do that even better... NO WAIT! I can't do that. Someone already did it... I have to be lame and not evolve."
I am so happy to know that I was apart of this movement, cause it is a movement..the underground scene in L.A would have practically been non -existent if it wasn't for these cats. Thursday nights were my favorite night of the week. I knew I was going to kick it on Crenshaw and Exposition if I had to walk or take the bus I was gonna be there. The Good Life resides in my heart and so does Project Blowed... Ava and her crew did a damn good job capturing the true spirt of The Life. Peace
you can watch the whole doc on hulu.com jus type in "this is the life" in the hulu search. the online stream is available til june 30 2010 so you only got like 3 weeks left
Ab Rude FINALLY set the bittin' that Bone Thugs did on the table for the world to see. Bone was in the Good Life when Micah 9's Mary demo was going around. Way before their 1st album dropped. the 1st time i watched it was like THANK YOU.
bone is one of my favorite groups and my whole time watching this documentary before they even mentioned bone i already knew they were about to mention how they got their style from there
By the way, some people may disagree with me but a lot of people will agree that if it wasn't for gangsta rap, a lot of lyrical, intellectual, spiritual artist, basically all of the hip hop artist mentioned in "this is the life" documentary would've made it or heard in the mainstream light. Does anyone agree?
I just saw this today and there's part when they talk about a rapper and that bone thugs n harmony might of got ideas or influenced from that certain rapper from the good life, any one know his name?
It may be difficult to pin point the origins of that fast rap style. Bone Thugs back in the 90's even had a beef with Twista from Chicago over who originated it. Maybe Myka 9 influenced Bone's technique with it? Anyway the idea of rapping fast goes back to the 80's.
Check out the rapper below in this clip on youtube. He uses a fast rap style and this was 1984:
Acey is just one of many mc's that call the blowed home, it's not really "his" spot.
project blowed is the "Afterlife" reffering to the good life cafe. The best hip hop WorldWide comes from the L.A underground all thanks to the good life Ben Caldwell and the Project Blowed. What's the Code!!!
Reunion show at the House of Blues on Sunset Blvd....Check GoodLifeLove(dot)com for more info. The tickets are already up on ticketmaster, I checked yesterday.
yo buddy, i live in the south ATL to be exact. me and my old lady are the only people we know who dig the whole underground movement. unfortunately, we can't make it. but if you would, maybe shoot some videos and upload them so me and my old lady can have a little church! or tell us who all showed up and showed out!
I live in metro Atlanta, and myself and my boy God's Mouthpiece thought that we were the only Good Life devotees in the A,since we've been followinf that scene since '92.
93 for me. the year i started skateboarding. this music + skateboarding = ill lines for days kid!
i'll have to check out your homeboy. has he got any videos here?
also, have you heard ATL's underground scene, ATF records?
I went to a show at the Masquerade, and only paid $1.50 for some quality underground hip hop. (Psyche Origami, Intellekt & Dirty Digits, Collective Efforts)
Yeah this is a must see for anyone who appreciates art in general, I think it belongs in the same discussion with Style Wars, Wild Style and Scratch in authentic impact in framing cultural movements...
I finally love the fact that someone did a documentary on the Goodlife. I use to drive up from San Diego to LA back in 1993 just to watch the explosive energy of the Lifers wreck the mics. It changed my life and made me a the creative person I am today in the design world and everything else I touch! Much love and Good Life will always be missed.
it screens twice in la this summer. once on july 31 at don't knock the rock. i think that's sold out. and again at the downtown la film festival in august.
it's on the festival circuit, for now, but will be released on DVD after they win the SunDance film festival award... hahaha. Seriously though, Ava said that it would come out on DVD after it was done screening throughout the festival circuit.
Can someone give a link to watch this please ?!?!!?!?!?!
