They sort of did win the battle. Despite "Loosing" they did enough damage to the invading force that it was not sustainable to continue the inquest of Roman territory. In Rome:Total War Campaign mode, it is a similar story. Winning a battle is easy, you can charge all in on most difficulties and win. However, preserving enough men to fight the next 20 unit battle is where the battle skill is involved. This did not happen in the real life Selucid invasion.

Equites are very light and vunerable but they aren't scouts they can be used as decoy or even for hammer and anvil against the militia hoplites or the levi pikemen.

It's because in custom battles you just have captains, whereas in (some) historical battles and in (some) campaign battles you can use 'family members' who look different. (And mostly better.)

PoM, I'm not sure if this issue was resolved or not, so I'll just add to it. The captains and family members are two different models in the campaign mode of the game, they look different on and off the battlefield. I can only imagine that this was done for the sole purpose of distinguishing between the two. The captains don't look that way in custom battles because you cannot add a family member into your army with a custom battle. I hope that helped some

I'm not sure, but I think it's when you have infantry fighting infantry and you circle around the back of the enemy infantry with heavy cavalry and charge them into the back for a bonus. It works especially well on phalanx units (spears, pikes, etc.)

What they're saying is there are General units that look like that in Campaign, but the "generals" of Multiplayer are actually captains on Campaign. The reason they made the generals crappy looking in custom is that the generals are considered "Captains" The model for Captain is different then the model for "Family Member". Family members are used only on Campaign mode

Depends totally on which era you like more. I'd recommend that you download the demos for those games and see for yourself. I didn't do that because I started playing Rome a while after it was released, in late 2004.

If your opponent had been smart(er), he would have pinned your army down as best he could, with foot soldiers and calvery, then rammed into your army from the side with the elephants.

A smart general saves their "trump card" (in this case the elephants) for when it is needed. They do not use it first, and they never use it first, and, unsupported.
