Good licks. As far as the pentatonics go, these dudes are good! Blues, baby! Just don't forget about the other scales, the seven modes. When you can combine them, you will become a true Jedi.
Marty and friends seem to be an endless well of cool licks and techniques. All aspiring guitarists who are roaming youtube hungry for knowledge owe Marty and guitarjamz a huge debt of gratitude. I know that these video lessons he posts here on youtube have helped my playing by leaps and bounds. Thank you Marty, Bob, Tony and everyone else at guitarjamz...I personally owe a huge portion of my blues playing ablitiy to you guys and the videos that you post...keep up the great work guys...
@Funkensteinlives funkstein i appreciate the kind thoughts we make these videos for guys just like you. you can see we have a blast making these but are dead serious on content. i think you know what i mean. thanks again bob ryan
I watch Marty's videos pretty religiously. Bob Ryan and Marty collectively exert the respect and admiration of blues [as well as other genres of] music that any and every player should try to mimic. You can't be great at something you DON'T love doing, and it sure shows that these guys love what they choose to do with their lives. Thanks Marty and Bob for pointing my feet down the right path in my musical life!
Marty a few days before school ended at CONCORDIA ELEMENTARY I brought my guitar in to my class and jammed out. while a I was walking to my class room a mom (your sister) asked me if I knew who Marty Schwarts was, I said "well of course I do" she told me you were her brother!!!! your neice who I think is going into third grade goes to school with me. Im going into fifth grade. If you read this please tell them Jackson says hi and please keep in touch with me.
@wordstir yes that was my sister and she told me about that. I'm so stoked to hear from people that actually watch and learn from my lessons. hopefully we can meet someday. thanks Jackson!!!!
You know, it seems not matter how hard I practice and how much I play, I still am not getting any better. I've been playing for about 2 and half years now and it still seems like I'm shit.
I want to know when I'll be good... no... GREAT, like these guys. The guitar is my love, it's all I want to do with my life and it's how I want to make a living, but it doesn't seem like a possibility with the way I play at the moment. *Sigh* don't mind me... I'm just ranting I guess...
The main guitar I use is a Lyon by Washburn (my first and only acoustic guitar). I also have a Fender Squier Strat (affinity series) but that is unfortunately unplayable at the moment due to a broken string and no money to fix it. No, I don't play with anyone. I have played with some people down at a guitar shop a couple times, but no solid jamming with anyone. I am pretty much self taught, I had a guitar teacher for about 3 months, but had to stop due to running out of money.
Oh, I have. I have practiced so much that my hands cramp up on me due to the nerves being pinched from the repetitive action of playing everyday for so long... at least that's what the doctor said is wrong with them.
So how long does it take to learn the pull-off? There are so many of these licks I want to learn but get frustrated because the pull offs just dont sound out LOUD.. I practice until the pads of my fingers feel like they are going to be pulled off! But I still can not make them sound out as loud as the hammer-on.. Is it about turning up the GAIN? On an acoustic it is even worse..They just wont sound out! Pointers on that technique so I can start jammin these licks out?
Thanks.. I just aquired 3 years of back issues of videos and audio lessons from Total Guitar magazine and Paul is featured in tons of the 10 minute lessons.. I have not gone thru the video lessons yet but now this will give me an incentive.
@CRAIGARRR Hey, it has almost everything to do with finger strength! Just keep doing them and they will get louder and stronger. Use your ring and pinky finger more when forming chords, and just repeat them to perfect the technique and build up strength. Once you get going, you get better faster and faster. You won't get these hammer ons and pull offs right away, but once you do, you have them for life
Thanks for the reply Rafterman 123! I guess it is like the old adage
PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
A pull off on the high E string in Am pentatonic (Cnote) is impossible.UGHH
I have been trying to do Hammer ons decending the pentatonic Am scale and Pull-offs acending, trying to strengthen fingers and improve technique that way.
I bought Marty's Blues DVD package and his third lick on one of the dvds is a "simple" hammer-on , Pull-off.. needless to say that 6 note lick kills me
It's funny how Clapton plays a Strat but goes out of his way to make it sound unlike a Strat and more like a humbucker guitar. He uses a mid-boost active circuit in his guitar plus plenty of gain.
I can relate though,. I hate the tinny, thin sound of stock Strat pickups but have found no guitar on Earth that feels better to play, hence why I play an "HH" or double-fat Strat.
@aragon667 Playing a solo is kind of like surfing. The rhythm and backing of a song will send out these big waves that go up or down or sustain, and you have to listen and tell yourself what you're feeling and play that. During a solo, you're riding those waves. It sounds kind of crazy, but practice a lot more and maybe it'll make more sense.
