So in other words, he is a rather unstable human being who inflicted pain on others because he believed that such pains were fair and just. So yes, according to him, he was very merciful.

my 2nd favorite joaquin scene in this movie (clearly the best actor in it) but what i really want to see is the scene where commodus (pheonix) kill marcus (?) just after the line " i would butcher the whole world if youd only love me!" so powerful, great delivery this and "im still here" are the reasons this man is one of the best.

Phoenix should have been cast as Anakin Skywalker in Episodes II and III. Hell, he should have been in Ep. I and Lucas could have CGIed him into an 8 year old. He is absolutely out of this wolrd in this movie. His character is so true. It was the first part I had ever seen him play, and Christ, he's astonishing. Amazing movie, soundtrack, actors :) I think it is my favorite, I must have watched it at least a dozen times. And Phoenix is always as powerful. You never get bored.

Jaoquin Phoenix's character is my favorite in this movie. He totally turned this roll inside out. He disgusts you, he makes you hate him, he makes you wish he were dead, hes outstanding. Not to take anything away from anyone else in the film... but he played a damn good part
