I actually skipped over your video a bunch of times in my search list, coz the thumbnail made me think it was just a reupload of the original 7:47 Siggraph Kinectfusion video.
I'm glad i watched it though. I wish more youtube videos were as informative as this (i took notes during yours).
Hi there. I'm planning to buy a Kinect specifically for this reason. However here in South Africa it costs $244 (ZAR 2000) This is not cheap and I will have to get a loan for this. I would like to know if the open source software can compile the 3D scene with texture. Then be able to export it as and .ply / obj. Can it export the texture aswell?
@Blooper1980 Sorry to hear that. I bought one recently for $76 including shipping and taxes. No. The free Kinfu implementation is still under development and does not export models, nor does it have color. But, there is a project that can do some things called RGBDemo. It can product object and room models. But, it can only handle about 1 room. It might make mistakes and the models it produces are not textured surfaces. They are dense point clouds, which can lower their quality.
@davidhere40 Hi there. Thanks very much for the speedy reply. Since everything is imported and bought and sold 10 times before you get it the prices here is much higher. :(
Thanks for the advice I do appreciate it. I would love to play with something that can capture 3D data in realtime. At the moment I'm playing with photogramatry to create the 3D models, but it takes about 1 week if you don't have anything else to do.
@davidhere40 I'm now in the process of bribing one of my friends to lend me his kinect to play with. Thanks again for the reply.. Greatly appreciated. If you want to see some of my older models just google me... Jaco Moolman It should be under the 3D models section.
@davidhere40 Hi, great work there on PCL. I'm the main developer of ReconstructMe. I wonder if we could team-up sooner or later to improve both of our systems.
@cheindify thanks! I actually haven't done much development on PCL. Just a bit here and there. I'd like to team up. But, I suddenly find myself without a moment of free time. I started taking a couple classes to get better at computer vision. Turns out, it's taking too much time. I think I'm going to cut it down to 1 class next semester, but still not sure how much time I'll have. I started developing an application specific robot using computer vision. I want to see where that goes.
@davidhere40 ok, who's the main developer of pcl kinect fusion then? Maybe you could get us in touch? Maybe you could drop me a private E-Mail? info(at)reconstructme(dot)net
@cheindify His name is Anatoly I believe. He's all over their forums. It's a free project, completely open source and you can download the source code today.
Brilliant. Good job. Thanks.

I just downloaded the V0.6 of the RGBdemo.

@Blooper1980 Have you tried EBAY? Even with shipping included, you'll probably get one much cheaper than $244US (yikes)
